Re: Pat Condell: Aggressive Atheism
Pat should be invited on fox news. They would both love and hate him. Come on O'Reilly, do it!

Re: Applying Economics to American History
I'm not going to watch this, but for anyone who will : Woods is a libertarian and a catholic convert. Also, he makes jokes just after he has passed off controversial statements as common sense. I mentioned the first two things because they are of profound importance in Mr Woods rhetoric.

Re: Psychiatry the Fraud
An example, I think, of how 'liberty thinking' without proper regard for fact or context leads to idiotic calls to arms. Psychiatry is still an extremely primitive tool for dealing with the brain, the most complex thing in the known universe, but one-sided blather won't produce anything better. I wonder if this guy has ever met a shizofrenic person... they can suffer terribly. And order may not be a fashionable word, but it's terribly important for all mammals that live in groups. At least humans at times try to help the person in question, instead of killing or casting him/her out.

Re: Invisible Machine: Electromagnetic Warfare
Yeah, that's irrelevant unfortunately. As long as the monopoly of violence resides de facto in the hands of the national governments, instead of (at least partly) in the hands of the species, there will never be much regard for such trivial things as laws or morality. And even then, if such a scenario is even imaginable, who knows what would happen...

Re: Invisible Machine: Electromagnetic Warfare
Did you watch the whole thing?
They actually mention that a nuke produces an EMP. The idea of a pure EMP weapon isn't new, but I've never heard a news report about it actually being used, so arguably it's still not the norm in modern warfare.. just like lasers (although there was one report about a laser attack in Irak, but even if it was true it was obviously just a test).

Re: Climate Change: Isn't it Natural?
Made an effort to dig just a little :
BBC 'What happened to global warming?' --> http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8299079.stm
Follow-up articles, which I had missed 'Cloud forecasting and Cosmic rays' and 'Global temperatures - and the future'
--> http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/paulhudson/

Re: Climate Change: Isn't it Natural?
awfabee, it's my understanding (from news reports) that the stagnation of global warming (which should continue for another decade before things, in terms of warming, get significantly worse) is understood and does not have any significant bearing on the long term prospects for our planet.
The possible multitude of mechanisms unknown should not deter us from trying to produce and to subsequently use these models to make projections. Quite the opposite.

Re: Harlan Ellison: Good Advice
All attitude aside, there may actually be some truth to his 'honest job' advice. If you've already spent your day sitting behind a computer, applying thought and perhaps even creativity to something that's actually useful, you might not be inclined to do the same thing (in a completely different way) when you come home.
On the other hand, I think every kind of job probably has a mind-numbing or socially limiting aspect to it.

Re: Healthcare Reform = Socialized Medicine
A healthcare plan that has a social component to it isn't stupid. It's a just political choice. If however you are a disciple of Thatcher or Raegan, then yes, if there is no such thing as a society, only individuals, then this bill is pure nonsense. Stupid socialists!
This guy is also playing fast and loose with his predictions for the future of the insurance industry. Not only does what he is saying SOUND rediculous, it actually IS rediculous... if the penalties are not high enough, surely along the way changes can still be made to fine-tune the bill. He over-values his own predictive abilities, but that's hardly surprising considering he can't (or won't) even tell insight from ideological dogma. What a sneaky little peckerhead!

Re: Grizzly Bear: Two Weeks (fan video)
ha, this is misbranded.. has nothing whatsoever to do with bears, but it IS pretty amazing.. especially considering the fact that it's just a fan video!
