I love these two, I don't know why - as you say, it's all in the delivery.

Re: BBC NAILS British Ambassador
I've been watching this closely. Countries that did not attend including the U.S. and Australia really dropped the ball on this one.

By not attending, they allow these events to devolve into a slanging match between the most extreme attendees. They should attend, debate, and rebutt - see it as an opportunity to confront racism rather than an excuse to run away.

Re: Claymation Chess
It is simple - just use clear fishing line or similar transparent wire to suspend the horse from a frame out of shot.

Re: Countdown: Lying in State
Faxis, ask yourself these questions - why is it Bill rarely gets reputable, confident experts on? Why is it always the lef- wing spotty kid from nebraska who heard about the issue on a blog and has no real knowledge or authority?

Why is it, on the rare occasion he does get reputable experts on, he gives them a tiny amount of airtime, cuts them off, and generally belittles them. For example, he got a climate change scientist on and tried to lecture them on global temperature theory.

Fox News has a global reputation for being proudly right-wing (not to mention being masters of spin).

No offense, but it is you who sees the world through rose-tinted glasses not buckingham...

Re: Stephanie Miller on Sarah Palin
Holy shit American politics is whacky as hell.

I thought we had jingoism and showboating here in Australia.

At least here when politicians have the 'look' and the so-called 'values' but no substance they get shot down like the Labour bimbo from South Australia did in the last election.

Can this woman be anything more than a whitebread, soccor-mom, gun-loving whackjob? Time will tell...

Re: Triumph the Insult Dog: Republicans vs Global Warming
Jellis, where on earth do you get that miraculously round number from anyway?

What IS remarkable about global warming science is how much in consensus the science community is on the issue - they all agree *something* is happening, and we are the root cause - the only thing they DO differ on is the severity of the change and its outcomes.

If you want a conspiracy theory about 'the man' keeping you down, go check out how the world economy works...

Re: Shming Swimming
About 1:30 for the next minute it looks dead... you could cut that minute out and people would definitely think it had drowned.

Also, better without sound unless you like to gag on sugary baby talk...

Re: Ronald Reagan
You guys need to brush up on your history - Reagan didn't win the Cold War - the Russians lost it. It was primarily to do with the Communist ideology wearing real thin with people who could not get the most basic of necessities they were promised would be abundant. You try getting your citizenry to be behind you when almost 70% of food fails to make it to end consumers because it rots on the way. You know the Reagan-as-winner view is flawed when even staunch Republican Neo-Cons like Fukuyama revise their views on what caused the Cold War to end!

Re: Hitchens: The Morals of an Atheist
Your interpretation of his conceptualisation of morality is incorrect. He does not say that morality is innate, but that a moral framework is obviously beneficial in terms of human evolution - societies that prosper are those where people cooperate. Part of cooperation is supporting others, belonging, and other facets of altruism. Furthermore, he argues that these elements of morality have been around long before monotheistic or even polytheistic institutionalised religion.

His opponent's argument that atheism = bad because Stalin and Hitler killed more people than the crusaders is also a completely illogical and ill conceived argument. One cannot compare numbers of people killed in the last century with those before it. Our capacity to kill large numbers of people quickly far surpasses that of the crusaders. Therefore, you cannot do a direct comparison.

Regarding rape, I wish to turn it around and ask you to explain to me how it is that rape is 'wrong' in the eyes of god, yet most of 'god's creatures' in the animal kingdom rape each other all the time. If our morality comes from a divine source why aren't other animals beholden to it also?

In atheist terms, rape is wrong because it is obvious the victims aren't willing participants. Being atheist doesn't mean a slavering psychopath / sociopath. Societally, rape is counter-productive because it creates conflict between families and groups and generates unrest on a broader scale. In order to survive as a species, social cohesion is vital to human beings.

Re: MTV Movie Awards 2007: Best Kiss, Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen
Lennon DID say that from behind an extremely large bank account though...

I'm not saying his message wasn't spot on, but he can rightly be accused of subscribing to the system he was so against.

I think this is great, even though it's obviously scripted - Will Ferrell is awesome.
