While the clip's implications that evolutionary theory is false because of Darwin's personal beliefs might be absurd, let's not exonerate Darwin of his bigotry.

Re: Why the Rich Love McCain's Tax Plan
Our argument isn't over whether poor people should have a fair chance or not, it's over how best to give them that chance. It's not a given that the government is the best entity to provide necessary services like education and it's not fair to say any theory that disapproves of government funded education fails to address the issue of providing education itself.

The rich generally do have more freedom in that their money allows them to accomplish more things. However, it doesn't follow that they should pay a higher percent of the taxes. It might level the playing field, but it would be best to make the poor richer instead of the rich poorer. Taxes could make the poor richer through government programs, but government programs don't match up to private market activity. The government has been shown to consistently fail in its pursuits financially, however good intentioned those pursuits were. It does not know how to spend money. Taxes on successful businessmen transfer money from the hands of people who have proven they know how to use it to the government, which squanders resources time after time. Again, I assume in this situation the wealthy businessmen became wealthy by satisfying consumers and not by making friends with politicians.

If your interest is helping people, let the businessmen continue to satisfy consumers.

Sorry I keep referring to you as the other guy. I responded to the last poster both times. In my post I misread your quote about the watchman as a watch factory employee, but the idea is the same.

Re: Why the Rich Love McCain's Tax Plan
Differing theories call for different amounts of government services. For hardcore libertarians like Rothbard, even roads and libraries are services that could better be offered by the private market. The reason there is so much debate between political poles is that differing theories have all been so thoroughly investigated that it's tough to call any one of them naive.

Responding to the other guy: The gamblers on Wall Street and the owner of the watch factory are make a lot but they also take in more risk than an employee. Successful entrepreneurs and investors are awarded to the extent that they predict and satisfy consumer demand. Profit is only the difference between the value of the raw materials and the final product. In this sense, the richest entrepreneurs are ones that take raw materials, which could be easily assembled in limitless ways, but correctly predict their highest valued assemblage according to the market. In the same sense, successful investors predict which companies are most valued by the market and funnel capital into the businesses that are most profitable.

When government intervenes by setting up contracts with businesses and giving out money to investors and entrepreneurs it interferes with the process, and profit no longer reflects satisfaction of consumer demand but government demand instead, so I agree that the government shouldn't be giving any hand outs.

Re: Why the Rich Love McCain's Tax Plan
I totally agree. Any money that the government is not spending makes me happier and richer.

But, to the other guy, it's the government that created the national debt, not the rich. Most rich people are not evil and have worked very hard to get where they are and don't deserve to have half of their incomes taken away each year by the government. Even if taxing the rich is the only way to get out of this nasty debt, we shouldn't be so smug about it.

Re: Why the Rich Love McCain's Tax Plan
Tax cuts let Americans keep their money. Where are the taxes all going? It doesn't take that much money to maintain roads and local libraries. If the government weren't able to print money out the ass, lowering taxes would limit how much the government could spend on war against its enemies and special subsidies for its friends.

Do they usually do staged interviews? I'm sure that Colbert would not be such a dick and try to pressure someone to come out of the closet when he isn't ready.
