The second kid had devised a way to run an internal combustion engine off of discarded plastic. The exhaust product from the engine was an edible material that was high in protein. The third kid had genetically engineered mice that could do calculus.

Even after hearing the green orbs were its eyes, and the dark things in front were its olfactory organs, it was difficult to look at that fish and not associate the smaller, darker, frontward-facing spheres with eyes.
