Re: Sam Harris: Fearless Among Peers
Harris is quick to establish differences between buddist sects but tries to sell Islam as one monolithic religion, basically equating sufis with wahabbists. Lazy, biased, intelectually flawed discourse.

Re: Animated History of Poland
Aaaaaaahmm...
Its allways a bit unconfortable to watch things like this. Having payed a bit more attention to the history of Poland, Poland-Lithuania and the Teutonic Order than the average person, I could easily follow most things depicted, But Ive grown a bit tired of the self absorved way people, eastern european nations specially, build their national mythologies.
Theyre stuck in this "historical grievances" phase most slavic nations developed in the late 19th cent. Like in this video, they cling to romantic notions of good vs evil, in a beautiful struggle to build a nation by sword and plow. Fuck, the polish were one of the most brutal and predatory military forces in their age, until one of their main victims finally grew a pair and subduem them, and they have been complaining about that for centuries. There is nothing romantic in that and its appaling than in present day nations still feed this neo-medieval romanticism to the people. That shit build into wars.

Re: 'Tolerance' and the 'Ground Zero Mosque'
Not exactly true. Cordoba has been a symbol for muslims (specially from the magreb) ever since the expulsion from the peninsula. To most it has been a symbol of cultural enlightment, of what a muslim society should aspire. And you know what? for most spaniards, the Cordoba Califate is also a milestone of our culture. One that was inclusive of muslim, christians and jews.
.
Even the extremists that in present days call for the recovery of "Al Andalus" usually avoid mentioning Cordoba because they prefer to be linked to the extremist Almoravid period.

Re: Football: Dog Versus Deer
But then Dogs and Wolfs were never really very good hunters to start with. What they are is mainly scavengers and pack hunters. Thats what makes them good herding help. A lone wolf or a dog poses little threat to a buck. And when fawns play, what they do is train on how to be a buck.

Re: Tea Bagger vs. Grayson
The US have managed, in the last 30 years, to win the cold war, remain the biggest industrial and economical power in the world... and still become the industraliced country with the worst upward mobility ratio. Even your average height is descending while everyone elses's go up (and before you mention it, those numbers take into consideration the flux of inmigrants with a different fenotype).
As flawed this health care reform is, you needed to have something done. Since regulating insurer policies would be too...socialist, you got this mud pie. Now eat it. Maybe when you eat enough of these you start educating about what socialism really is, and forget all that cold war rethoric about it.
As much of a romantic appeal it might have, libertarians and minarquists are like the special ed. children on the school of politics, oblivious about the dangers of licking the lamps wire.

Losing his hand to cancer is a convenient lie...we all know his father chopped it off when he refused to join him and bring peace to the galaxy...
...ahem...
Prosthetics is an interesting field in many ways, but usually the ones who need these advances cant pay this kind of advanced gizmos... That is, unless some kind of socialiced health service pays for it. Wich kind of blows the tired argument of socialized medicine killing medical R+D. (Italy has a socialiced health service and Switzerland a private one but heavily policied by the goverment).

Re: Taliban is Getting American Troops Hooked on Heroin
Actually, I remember reading reports about the heroin strategy against the soviets way before 9-11. And Ive been wondering if the same thing has been happening these days for a while.
the whole tactic against the soviets was beautifully devious and perverted... they would sell the drug to underage sex workers, quite cheap, and the children would offer it to their clients, the same way a hooker in the West would offer a drink. The rational behind this was that if the children got hooked too, it was fine because they were sinners anyway.

Re: Carl Orff: Carmina Burana
I love Carmina Burana.
When I was a kid, my school had a very good classical choir (we even traveled to sing all around Spain, went to Soviet Moscow and did a small Christmas tour in Rome, including two concerts in Vatican City). I was a contralto and that meant I had little oportunity to do solos, but when I was like 11, I was selected along 5 other kids from the choir to sing a small part of Carnina Burana on a couple of big concerts.
In Tempus es iocundum I sang:
Oh, oh, oh,
totus floreo,
iam amore virginali
totus ardeo,
novus, novus amor
est, quo pereo.
We sang Beethoven, Mozart, Haendl and many more, but I think Carmina Burana is my fondest memory from the choir. You dont know how impressive ir is to be on a stage beign part of something so powerful.

That vision of Islam as monolithic, something it has never been, doesnt stand a cultural or historical analisys. For one, there is no one single interpretation of Islam, nor a single set of texts. There are muslim traditions with centuries of history of non violence, yet Harris and you speak of monolithism.
