We *are* all driving on sunlight - virtually every fuel we use came from a source that used the sun for energy.

About the only exception is electric vehicles that use power produced by a nuclear reactor.

Only recent solar cells are capable of producing more energy over their lifetime than the energy required to manufacture them. Some still don't. For the most part, it's the high energy cost that makes solar panels so expensive.

Overall, he could have just plugged his car into a wall socket and used much less overall energy that that derived from his solar panels. And, at about 5 cents a kilowatt in the US Northwest insead of many thousands of dollars on the enormous solar array needed to charge up the car using only 1 day's worth of sunlight...to drive all of 40 miles.
