Wingsuit

Wingsuit flying (birdman suit or squirrel suit) is the sport of flying the human body through the air using a special jumpsuit, called a wingsuit, that shapes the human body into an airfoil which can create lift.

Gary Connery, 42, from Oxfordshire, leapt from a helicopter a mile above Henley then glided down using a specially adapted wing suit before landing on a "runway" of 18,000 cardboard boxes. "It was so comfortable, so soft. My calculations obviously worked out and I'm glad they did," he told Sky News afterwards. His wife Vivian said she was "relieved its all over". To prepare for the jump he underwent weeks of intensive training in Switzerland and Italy, leaping from mountains and cliffs to perfect his wing suit glide angle. As part of the preparations, Mr Connery studied the flight of kite birds and how they use their tail to control their flight direction. "Kites steer by twisting their tail one way or another and I'll be doing the same," he explained before the jump. Gary Connery Mr Connery made his first parachute jump aged 23 after joining the Army. He went on to become a professional stuntman, completing 880 skydives and 450 base jumps. He has acted as stunt-double for the likes of Gary Oldman, John Hurt and Rowan Atkinson and appeared in films such as The Beach, Die Another Day, Batman Begins and Indiana Jones. He also leapt from the Eiffel Tower, Nelson's Column, Tower Bridge and the London Eye. "This stunt will get great recognition and will be a post in the runway of aviation history," Mr Connery said beforehand. "I'm sure plenty of people will think I'm bonkers but that's OK, I take that as a compliment." Landing a wing suit without a parachute has been a dream of skydivers since the modern wing suit was invented in 1997 by French skydiver and aristocrat Patrick De Gayardon. The unique design of his suit enabled "pilots" to barrel-roll, swoop and fly in formation. Tragically, Mr De Gayardon died a year later in a skydiving accident in Hawaii after a modification to his suit caused his parachute to malfunction. US skydiver Jeb Corliss planned to become the first to land a wing suit without a parachute but his plans were suspended after he was seriously injured during a recent jump in South Africa. Unmoderated Tag: Skydiving Rating: Ok Hits: 372 Comments: 1 Wingsuit Inflate Failure Wingsuit Inflate Failure On Saturday December 03 2011, I've jumped from Aragon wall for a wingsuit fly with my friend El Amarillo. After few second I felt my wingsuit going in a right turn then suddenly I fell head down barrel and fly on my back. Then I pulled and my canopy opened with lines twist which never stop increasing. The wind flow from gorge pushed my canopy against the wall and I tried to twist off as quick as I could. Lucky one second before inpact a little wind escape my canopy from the wall and I could fly free. After looking to the videos, we were scared to see that the right wing didn't inflate. I asked for expertise (from Tony, Matt, JeanNoel, Robert, James...) to know if it was a pilot mistake or a wingsuit malfunction? For sure the only one (small) vent inlet of the wing too close the harness made this scary situation, add to some other issue (little lateral wind, bad exit, hide vent, burble depress...). A little hide or poor inflation on wing made this critical situation. I've looked at all video rush: nothing bad, chestrap tired, vents openend, wings linked by zip... After I've checked all the wingsuit: egal size (not asymetrical built), number of cells, size of vents, number of hole cells, no clamping of wings outside and inside, egal time of wing inflate with hairdryer. I was lucky and I still alive, my video could give a way to change the future for all Xbird1 owners (it was in private share at begenning for expertise, but many persons told me to share it). In a short start or a less steepy wall I was died. I think that Tonysuits should call all them back for update because X1 will have a long life with many differents owner. Perhaps I was unlucky... perhaps I will be the only one, perhaps yes, perhaps no!? But I don't know the answer. Dec 8, 2011 10:03 AM

Lucy developed a summer school concept alongside Melbourne’s RMIT University working with their architecture, fashion, media and interior design students. This pioneering framework aims to unite students with brands and the music industry giving them the opportunity to work directly with industry professionals on a real project. She approached Rat Vs Possum to see if they would be interested in Lucy and twenty of the University’s top design talent to unite forces and facilities in an intense three week production. Lucy is currently in discussion with institutions across the globe to replicate this framework that offers a fresh and pragmatic strategy that summons a new direction in creative education, beckoning what is tipped to become the ‘Lucy McRae School’. Rat Vs Possum’s Let Music and Bodies Unite is a dance-inspired party album with a music video to match! Trained as a classical ballerina and renowned as a pedigree artist Lucy creates her very own Rock Eistedford! (an Australian nationwide competition for music, dance and drama school students). Lead vocalist Daphne Shum takes us on her journey through her two disparate worlds; whimsical dance choreographies that reference synchronised swimming and a high school science lab are some of the scenes in this fun, theatrical, orchestrated puppet show. These two realities are united by the metallic clad vocalist, Daphne driving these kaleidoscopic worlds. Acclaimed video artist Kit Webster re-projects looped footage back into these worlds to add a synth-pop undertone which perfectly befits the feel of this album.
