Recorded in various bursts of activity over 2010 and 2011 along with an updated mix of live staple "The Light" from The Solipsist EP (Noyes Records, 2010), lyrically, the album answers a question posed in Jean Baudrillard's essay from The Vital Illusion: "Is a ghost history, a spectral history, still a history?" Where KESTRELS' debut LP Primary Colours (Noyes Records, 2009) was a relatively safe sonic affair, their sophomore full length A Ghost History, their first for revered Canadian independent label Sonic Unyon Records, ups the ante considerably. Self-producing the record to ensure it met their own standards, sometimes refining and re-recording songs multiple times over the year (album closer "The Past Rests" was tracked 23 times in four different recording sessions) until everyone was satisfied). The results jump out of the speakers — from the opening drone and washed-out guitar of "Drowning Girl", the screeching crescendos of "The Field Where I Died", and to the alien lines all over the first single "There All The Time Without You". Even Tim Wheeler of Irish band Ash, the teenage hero of Peck's who struck up a friendship with Peck backstage at an Ash show in 2003, drops by to guest on album standout "Dumb Angel", featuring Wheeler's inimitable guitar style front and center. Blending earnest lyrics & an endearing sense of melody with an updated take on 90's indie rock guitar histrionics, and now based in Halifax, Toronto and Montreal, KESTRELS' A Ghost History delivers on the promises made on the early releases by the band. Kestrels are Chad Peck, Devin Peck (bass), and Paul Brown (drums). Feb 27, 2013 4:52 PM

Unmoderated Tag: Music Rating: No Votes Hits: 96 Comments: 0 Wake Owl: Wake Owl: "Gold": Sxsw 2013 Showcasing Artist Singer/songwriter Colyn Cameron of Wake Owl has been immersed in the world of music for the past ten years. Now based in Vancouver, BC and Portland, OR, Colyn was originally born and raised in southern California. "In the beginning I was mostly into rhyme stuff/hip hop," Colyn notes, "I wrote rap basically. I used to go around the school ground rapping my verses to whoever would listen. Then about seven years ago I picked up a guitar and taught myself basic stuff and immediately began writing songs." After graduation Colyn trained in organic agriculture at Emerson College in England, worked on different farms throughout the UK, Germany, Chile and Canada, and traveled the world. Colyn found his journeys to be a catalyst for writing songs. "My writing process is always changing. I usually find the most inspiration after these long periods of not having too much of my own space, touring or traveling. A lot just tends to pour out rather quickly," he reflects. Upon returning to Vancouver, Colyn spent some time playing in bands before deciding to record the songs he had written after his journey, and thus began the Wild Country EP. "With this EP I was really focused on just creating recordings I could be proud of and felt connected to as a group of songs. I wanted to capture and represent, in all its instrumentation and arrangement, what those songs mean to me," says Colyn. The result is a five-song EP that harvests raw, honest, emotion through Colyn's words and melodies. The Wild Country EP will be made available nationwide via Vagrant Records on January 29th, 2013. Permanent Tag: Celebrities Rating: Good Hits: 244 Comments: 0 Declan O'Rourke: Declan O'Rourke: "Lighting Bird Wind River Man": Sxsw 2013 Showcasing Artist Declan O'Rourke was a latecomer to the Dublin singer-songwriter scene. But, in his mid-twenties, within months of discovering Dublin's bustling songwriter open-mic circuit, O'Rourke found himself in the mix with the likes of Paddy Casey, Gemma Hayes, Damian Rice and many other Irish singer-songwriters. In 2004, Declan released his debut album, Since Kyabram. 'Galileo (Someone Like You),' his debut single, has been covered by numerous artists including Josh Groban, and performed by Paul Weller and Chris Rea. Such was the critical and commercial success of Since Kyabram in Ireland that it opened the doors for him internationally, earning him plaudits from the likes of Snow Patrol, Kate Rusby, each of whom were rapturous in their praise of Declan's deep-honey voice and astute song writing abilities. His follow-up album in 2007, Big Bad Beautiful World, easily consolidated his appeal in Ireland and also with his growing list of well-connected champions. Support slots followed in the UK and Europe to the likes of Paulo Nutini, Snow Patrol, Teddy Thompson, The Cardigans, Badly Drawn Boy, Divine Comedy and Paul Brady. O'Rourke released Mag Pai Zai, his third album, on his own Rimecoat label in April '11. It managed to top the success of Declan's first two albums, holding its own in Ireland's Top 10 Album Chart for four consecutive weeks. O'Rourke's songs have been recorded by a host of highly-respected, successful artists. 'Galileo (Someone Like You)' was recorded by Josh Groban for his fifth studio album, Illuminations, produced by Rick Rubin. O\'Rourke\'s voice has been compared to honey, gravel and chocolate melting on a hot tin roof, drawing comparisons with Rufus Wainwright, while his songs have been compared to those of Leonard Cohen. His influences are as many and varied as The Ink Spots to Bob Dylan to Bruce Springsteen to Bjork. Feb 13, 2013 11:26 PM

Permanent Tag: Television Rating: Good Hits: 315 Comments: 0 Turtle Giant: Turtle Giant: "We Were Kids": Sxsw 2013 Showcasing Artist" It's not easy to stand out in the proliferating indie rock cliché -- a cesspool of mediocrity and forced emulation. Turtle Giant gives any reference of cliché a roundhouse kick to the face. Formed in 2009, Turtle Giant has been laying the bricks for what has become a multi-national, multi-dimensional musical escapade. São Paolo/Macau natives, the trio consists of members Frederico Ritchie (Guitar, Bass, Keys, Vocals), António Conceição (Vocals, Guitar, Bass) and Beto Ritchie (Vocals, Drums, Guitar). After writing and recording their 2011 debut album Feel To Believe (AwÁ Records) and building a strong following in their Brazilian homeland, the band made a cross-continental leap settling in Barcelona and playing dates across Spain for the majority of 2011. Fearless and hungry for new horizons, 2012 saw the band part with its growing Spanish fanbase and traverse the globe yet again for Macau -- the band's current locale. Amidst rampant touring across Southeast Asia, the band performed at notable festivals including the Spring Scream Festival in Taiwan and the Music Matters Festival in Singapore in early 2012. They were also picked to perform at KEXP\'s CMJ Union live broadcast along with The Antlers, DIIV and Paul Banks. With top-notch songwriting and polished instrumentals, Turtle Giant delivers hard-driving, melodic rock infused with modern psychedelia and classic rock undertones. The band's debut single "Sunlight" from Feel To Believe caught the attention of music supervisors and has seen placements on primetime television in The Ghost Whisperer, One Tree Hill and 90210. Fueled by their early success, the band's next recorded endeavor comes in the form of the self-produced All Hidden Places EP (Self-Released), which was recorded at the historic Dom Pedro V Theatre in Macau and was mixed and mastered by Fernando Sanches at Studio El Rocha in São Paulo, Brazil. Driven by the anthemic lead single "We Were Kids", the EP showcases the band's development into a veritable force to be reckoned with. With notable influences stemming from classic rock, psychedelia, blues, and traces of grunge, All Hidden Places delivers five emotionally-charged songs that emerge infectiously simple yet gracefully gargantuan. Permanent Tag: Music Rating: Good Hits: 210 Comments: 0 Churchill: Churchill: "Change": Sxsw 2013 Showcasing Artist Tim Bruns - lead vocals and rhythm guitar / Tyler Rima - bass / Bethany Kelly - vocals and keys / Joe Richmond - drums / Mike Morter - mandolin, banjo, lead guitar, uke and crowd pleasing Churchill singer/guitarist Tim Bruns and mandolin player Mike Morter have been making folk-infused rock songs with a delicate bluegrass flair together since the first day they met. In 2009, Bruns and Morter added bassist Tyler Rima, drummer Joe Richmond, and keyboardist/singer Bethany Kelly to their lineup, a move that vastly expanded their sound and birthed the high-energy alt-country/pop-rock hybrid that is Churchill. As with all of Churchill's releases so far, Change EP is entirely self-produced and self-recorded by the band to truly capture the raw, frenetic energy of their live show. Their upcoming debut for A&M;/Octone, offers up a selection of songs that flaunt their supreme skills in blending hook-laced pop with soulfully charged, lushly textured rock. From the freewheeling country swing of "Ark in a Flood" (a sprawling anthem marked by soaring, sunny harmonies) to the Motown strut of "Change" (a gorgeously pained love song on which Kelly's tough but tender vocals take the lead), Change EP enlists Churchill as an outfit that's both classic in sensibility and undeniably fresh in sound. Always honored to be on stage, Churchill\'s live experience is a major part of how they effectively leave their audience feeling hopeful and ready to change the world. Feb 13, 2013 11:16 PM

Permanent Tag: Music Rating: Good Hits: 415 Comments: 0 NY Gypsy All-Stars: NY Gypsy All-Stars: "Crosswind": Sxsw 2013 Showcasing Artist A Greek bassist ducked into a little bar in New York's Alphabet City and heard the Eastern Mediterranean and Southern Balkans pouring across the packed room. The clarinet was keening and singing, and he knew every tune. From this blown-away moment of discovery, the New York Gypsy All-Stars sprang, uniting bi-musical virtuosi raised on the lush sounds of Macedonian, Greek, Turkish, and American roots and forged in the halls of the world's best music schools. With composerly ears and a madcap relish for ill and crunky sounds, the quintet of crack musicians tears through the tollgates separating the region's interlocking roots on the long-awaited album of original pieces, Romantech (Traditional Crossroads). "We cover all the Balkans melodically," explains classically trained, traditionally raised Macedonian clarinet wonder and band headman Ismail Lumanovski, "and we cover the world rhythmically and harmonically." Zooming with Roma-inspired zeal from swinging salsa to pulsing bhangra, the group never loses its sharp musical focus, astounding chops, and true spirit their Gypsy namesakes. "We use lots of musical elements in our original compositions that are typically Balkan Romany in style but aren't necessarily in your face, like the 9/8 rhythm on tracks like 'NY9' or the way we use musical ornaments throughout the songs," Lumanovski muses. "But more important than that is how we use the Gypsy term in a broader sense. We are taking what the Gypsies did, traveling from India to the Balkans and on to Western Europe and putting together the best musical ideas from every nation along the way. We're open to the world, and we just take everything we like and make it one." The All Stars come by this impulse and skill naturally. It's a rare thing, even in music-rich Southeastern Europe and in musician-packed New York, to find conservatory-caliber musicians who grew up playing weddings or rocking a Ä?oÄ?ek or a ?§iftetelli with local masters. Yet that's exactly what the All Stars are: Alongside degrees from places like Juilliard and Berklee, they grew up jamming with local roots musicians or defiantly attacking traditional zithers with their bare fingers, getting into Latin jazz or bringing the funk.
