It was one of several British music hall-inspired songs written by both Mercury and Brian May that appeared on other Queen albums from the 1970s. The song starts with a piano and vocal introduction by Mercury, then continues, with the bass and drums adding on, at the start of the chorus. The second verse is sung, followed by another chorus. At this point, the drums, bass and guitar drop out, which then leads into the bridge, sung by Freddie Mercury and Mike Stone. Following the Brian May guitar solo, another verse is sung, and then the chorus ends the track. The song describes how "a good old-fashioned lover boy" will romance with an unnamed love interest. The single version and the album track version differ significantly. On the album track, there are more vocal harmonies added. The music was started off by Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon jamming in the studio in Montreux. From then on Freddie Mercury composed the song and added the long interlude. The melody is Mercury's as well. Lyrics were started off by Mercury but completed by drummer Roger Taylor. The orchestra in the middle part was completely done with synthesizers; by Freddie Mercury and the producer David Richards. Yes guitarist Steve Howe played the Spanish guitar solo in the middle because, admittedly, Brian May couldn't do it. Steve dropped by in the studio to say hi to producer David Richards, then Freddie invited him to join them on the track. This was Queen's third #1 in the UK after "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Under Pressure." Chris Daughtry performed this song on the fifth season of American Idol. The setlist was quite special (Queen played 'Gimme Some Lovin' or 'Big Spender' only scarcely) and there were even rumours about David Bowie's appearance for 'Under Pressure' but that unfortunately didn't happen. Brian May said of the concert, "The Wembley concerts in 1986 were the pinnacle for us. We were at our height band-wise, and Freddie had developed this phenomenal way of dealing with stadium audiences. Being back home in London playing two sell-out nights was such a big, big occasion for us. None of us realized that this would be almost the last time we played together."
