A History of Presidential Commander in Chief Limousines The Presidential State Car is the official state car used by the President of the United States. Analogous to the President's use of an airplane designated Air Force One, the automobile?traditionally a limousine?is informally known as "Cadillac One". The President of the United States travels in one of two armoured Cadillac limousine based upon the normal sedan, the Cadillac DTS, with heavy customisation. Lincolns have also been used in the past, most notably by President John F Kennedy. The current vehicles were custom-built by a company called O'Gara, Hess and Eisenhart, founded in Fairfield, Ohio in 1942, and specializing in armouring limousines for presidents and heads of state. The vehicle's extensive features include dark windows, state-of-the-art communication and protection systems, a hidden desktop for use of the President and the rear of the limousine is fitted with a gas-proof chamber if Cadillac One were to incur a gas attack.[17] Unlike most other world leaders, with the occasional exception of Queen Elizabeth II, the President's limousines and escort vehicles are transported by the US Air Force for use on all foreign and domestic trips by the Commander-in-Chief. They will then be supplemented by coaches, police vehicles, additional limousines and a fully equipped field ambulance provided by the host nation or state. 1960 Election: JFK Prematurely Declared the Winner Interesting story behind this clip: Its 7:20 AM on Wednesday November 9, 1960. Chet and David have been on the air nonstop for over 12 hours and the NBC execs are getting worried about how much longer they can go on. Kennedy is still just one electoral vote shy of victory, and he is leading in three states (Minn., Ill., and Cal.) any one of which will put him over the top. David Brinkley in his autobiography says that someone at NBC gave an order to declare Kennedy the winner in the state where he had the biggest lead thus calling the election for him. At 7:19 AM EST his lead was largest in California, so NBC called the state for him, and declared Kennedy the winner of the election. Huntley and Brinkley turned the proceedings over to Dave Garroway and the Today Show, and left for a well-deserved rest. Only problem was that Kennedy didn't win California. It took several days of counting absentee ballots, but Nixon took the Golden State. If NBC had been willing to wait a few more hours, Minnesota would have delivered victory to JFK. 1960 Nixon vs. Kennedy Debate. "The Bronze Warrior", a chapter in the of the PBS American Experience series "The Presidents" gives a nine minute treatment of the 1960 Presidential race between Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy. These were the first debate ever between presidential candidates in the United States, televised or otherwise. Nixon was the favorite going in, but ended up losing the election by a narrow margin and suspicion of electoral fraud. The first Kennedy/Nixon debate is often cited to underscore the power of television in modern elections. Polls taken afterward indicated the radio audience tended to asses Nixon as the winner, while television audiences polled the reverse.
