In the archive clip above Hicks gives a one-off and extremely rare comedy performance in 1992 for STV show The Funny Farm. Filmed on his first ever tour of the UK, the American comic, who was to become a legend in his own lifetime and influence a whole generation of comedians, can be seen taking the micky out of the Scottish audience who, at this stage, don't quite 'get' his sarcastic, observational jokes. One of the most controversial and acclaimed stand-ups of all time, Hicks was born in Valdosta, Georgia on 16th December 1961. He died in 1994 at the age of 32 from pancreatic cancer. Developing in the same comedy clubs as Jay Leno, Denis Leary and Jerry Seinfield, Hick’s aim was to challenge his audience and 'make people think for themselves.' Because of his 'take no prisoners' attitude, he was constantly in trouble with the media for his outspoken and outrageous statements and rants on religion, politics, philosophy, drugs, alcohol, music and consumer culture. From that point of view, his influence can be felt on the likes of current no-holds-barred Scottish comedians such as Frankie Boyle. The Funny Farm launched the careers of Fred McAuley and Karen Dunbar among others. User: spam_vigilante May 5, 2013 5:34 PM

Permanent Tag: Science Rating: Good Hits: 1351 Comments: 0 Science Report Alternative 3, 1977 Science Report Alternative 3, 1977 In the 1970s English television company Anglia TV ran a weekly programme called 'Science Report''. It is likely this series would have been long forgotten and forever banished down the cathode memory hole except for the fact the series was ending and they decided to produce a show called 'Alternative 3' due to be broadcast on April Fools Day 1977 but because of industrial action was actually broadcast the day before the summer solstice on June 20th 1977. The show features an investigation of the 'brain drain' of British scientists who were apparently disappearing like flies. The investigation led to the discovery of a secret strategy by the global power elite to populate the planet Mars in the wake of a terminal environmental catastrophe on Earth. The name 'Alternative 3' comes from the three possible responses to such a catastrophe, the first was global population reduction (see Georgia Guidestones), the second deep underground military bases (see DUMBs) and the last, the one they chose; an escape from planet earth by a joint American-Soviet secret space program and subsequent colonisation of Mars via the Moon. What is interesting about 'Alternative 3' and why it has achieved legendary status is the fact that both conspiracy heads and debunker/skeptics use the programme as "proof" of their own belief systems. The "believers" see the show as a controlled leak of real plans that have actually been put into effect (see the late Jim Keith's 'Casebook On Alternative 3' or Stewart Best's 2002 four hour plus video 'analysis'). The debunkers use it to show the gullibility and stupidity of 'conspiracy nuts' pointing out it's status as a 'mockumentary' using stock footage with all the roles played by actors coupled with the fact everyone involved has stated it was a 'hoax' pointing out the original date it was due to air. Given the choices between the two approaches to Alternative 3, I would suggest there is a different way to model this phenomena, a third way if you like; the Jungian notion of synchronicity, Pierre Teilhard de Chardin's concept of the 'noosphere' and Sheldrake's hypothesis of 'morphogenetic fields' or to put it country simple, sometimes there is just 'something in the air' that writers and artists tune into. Of course for the believers this is just a useful idiot or dupe speaking and to the debunkers it's pure idealist non-scientific hogwash. User: TheNextDylan Apr 2, 2013 10:38 AM
