A timeless film... and really overlooked in the Pacino canon for being what it is.

I concur. This is a prime example of why the 70s was the best era for film acting; the time when 'the method' approach peaked: screen writers and actors were not only concerned with exploring new artistic territory, they were extremely focused on their authenticity.
