Scientology and the Age of Dianetics
It's possible, right?

Re: Scientology and the Age of Dianetics
M & Cs seems to be in the middle of an atheists' arms race: mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the most atheist of them all? ... No wonder some call the website Milk and Atheists. One day, Richard Dawkins and/or Christopher Hitchens might show up. That would be great.

An idea pops into my head: maybe we could organize an atheist day, on which all the links are related to the subject. Another sort of theme day could be dedicated to religion. Then there’s animal day, cinema day, risque day, you name it. Flashbacks should represent some of the best previously submitted links, and users may make wish lists of which links they would like to see on such a theme day. While we’re at it, we could install a White_Wolf day, or any other regular of M & Cs (but for some reason, I thought of myself first …).

Interesting idea actually.

But don't forget people, you don't have to be an atheist to know that Scientology is just fucking stupid. So is Tom Cruise, but he calls her Katie.

You guys don't have to traverse a subterranean section of Earth under Times Square every day and have to deal with these subway evangelists, cult idjits, Jews for Jesus freaks and soul savers.

I have no idea what draws them to this section of the planet other than a few million people passing by every day. And yeah, there's the Scientologists who have their marks holding tin cans hooked up to a crude voltmeter (or is that an ammeter?).

Screw 'em all.

Why not buy or rent a helicopter?

Uh, when the weather warms up a bit, I go street level. But unfortunately, some of those people who want to save my soul come outside as well.

Can't I just pay attention to that nice Asian man on late night TV with the pretty girls on his boat telling me, "I'm rich, why not you?" Life would be so much more simple if I didn't have to work.

Re: Scientology and the Age of Dianetics
Okay, drastic circumstances call for drastic measures. Don’t worry: there is a solution. Listen carefully:

As you know, New York City was once called New Amsterdam, but the English conquered it, and the Dutch thought (after the second Anglo-Dutch War) “Fine, keep it; we prefer Run in the East Indies.” BUT, the sneaky Dutch never told the English about New Amsterdam’s extensive sewer system. By now, you probably smell where this is leading to …

Afterward (New Amsterdam being renamed New York City), this sewer system, a world unto itself, wasn’t used again (although some disagree; more on that later), and, to my knowledge, most or all New Yorkers (rats included) never found out about it. I happen to glance over the blueprints right now. There appears to be a main route leading under Times Square. With a bit of luck, you can follow the tributaries (all spick and span) all the way to your suburban home ... Now, be careful and don’t let anyone else find out about this; there’s no doubt, otherwise, that messiahs, prophets, and other soul savers would discover the excellent acoustic properties of the Ol’ Dutch Sewers of New York City.

You may commence diggin’ (Times Square is so busy at all times, no one would notice).

And now to get back to the possible discovery of the Dutch sewers …of especial interest to all the conspiracy people out there, yes the sewers I speak of might have been used to transport the fifteen wives of Rudy Ghouliana to all parts of the City, and furthermore (the plot thickens), could have been used in the brutal 2001 assault on the mighty American Empire ... However, these aren’t my opinions.

Check out M&C user profiles. Go to the section called "Lifestyles". In the sub-section "Religion", see what users wrote there. You may (or not) be enlightened.

Religion is always a sensitive subject. Posts on religion usually generate quite a few comments. This is a good thing. M&C users have a lot to say.

Re: Scientology and the Age of Dianetics
Yes, I knew about the Lifestyle Section. Mine says atheist, but my random sampling of other examples has yielded little information. I guess most users are reticent about this sort of stuff, which I can understand. Of the people who did write something down, quite a few (the majority, in fact) report having no religion.

Furthermore, voting on links that are atheistic in nature is usually high and positive, which tells me a lot of people around here aren't religious, in all likelihood.

I take it M & Cs is M & Atheists still. I do, however, detect more and more people of faith lately. As long as we all remain more or less civil, this increasing diversity is positive.

But being an Atheist isn't a 'thing', like being a 'Christian' or a 'Muslim'. Atheism is exactly the same as being listed as 'No Religion', it's a way of thinking, or technically, it's a way of thinking beyond a way that wants you to think less.
