Actually, Cuba's unemployment is hovering at around 9%, about twice the US rate as of 2006, and this with an embargo policy in effect for almost fifty years. And even then, the government provides housing, food and top-notch medical care for all its' citizens.
I'm not a big fan of Fidel's personal style, as the cult of personality is never a healthy phenomenon, but it's astounding that after half a century, the US media keeps pumping out a caricature ignorant version of naughty, naughty Cuba, who won't play the corporate exploitation game (what do they call it, economic neoliberalism?) with Washington.
All one has to do is compare the quality of life of citizens in Cuba as opposed to Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua or any other Latin America country that is/has been controlled by a puppet regime obedient to Chiquita Banana or Exxon Mobil.
The same applies to Venezuela, made into a pariah as a cult of personality has emerged to attempt to undo the damage done by decades of US corporate exploitation.
On the Daily Show, Evo Morales even joked to Stewart about how his Bolivia "is not part of the axis of evil" - "No somos parte del eje del mal".
One would think that Letterman would know better, but he too seems to hold the same inside-the-box, indoctrinated viewpoint.

or perhaps, the segment is supposed to be funny...and as much comedy does, it went after stereotypes.
Though, I'm sure with an excellent letter-writing campaign, you could get Letterman and his crew of capitalistic fools to do a Top Ten segment that has a focus on factual information.

or perhaps, the segment is supposed to be funny, but falls pitifully short on that goal. The Daily Show is much funnier, because it is much truer. A talented writer could come up with a much funnier top ten list by sticking to reality.
Number 11: "Fidel decided his brother Raul was ready to be installed as the new democratically elected president for life."
See how easy that is? Even criticism can be true.
