Re: The Folly of Attacking Iran
There is a bit of a problem with this line of reasoning. In 1953, the Ayatollas (the shiite clergy that led the 1979 revolution) actually supported the coup.
The Fadaian Islam, the Islamist political party that was the forebearer of the Iranian revolution, demonstrated against Mossadegh and even recieved funding and support by the CIA!! The day after the August 19 coup, the Fadaian's newsletter published:
"Yesterday Tehran was shaking under the manly feet of the soldiers of the Muslim and anti- foreign army. Musaddiq, the old blood-sucking ghoul, resigned... under the annihilating blows of the Muslims... All governmental centers were captured by the Muslims and the Islamic army..."
Two weeks later, Ayatollah Kashani , who's son was a critical component of the 1979 revolution and remains an influential Ayatolla today, said in an interview:
"Musaddiq was guilty of high treason and had to be punished by death."
It wasn't until 1961 that the Ayatollas had a falling out with the shah, as their political powers were dissolved in parliament. They realized their revolutionary ambitions for a pure Islamic state were no longer amenable under the pro-western modernist regime of the Shah.
The platitude, that "The Iranians legitamately hate America because we supported a coup against the democratically elected Mossadegh regime..." is too simplistic and attempts to re-write history.
