A plea in advance. Please, let's have no one tell us how P&T take it to extremes and how recycling really works.

Re: Penn & Teller: Bullshit! Recycling
Problem is that chemicals and toxins are produced when plastic is manufactured, and can take thousands of years to break down. If we can create a biodegradable plastic made from vegetable matter that does not harm natural resources then there will be no more need to recycle it. Also, hemp is a lot more efficient to grow than paper fiber, and he did not bring that up as a solution, as if tree paper is fine. Problem is that a lot of the paper comes from Indonesia where forests are being lost daily. Paper in the US is not being lost because it is less expensive to get the wood fiber from Indonesia. Still, if recycling is not working, we should come up with other solutions.

Or hsi he BSing us? What if at the end of the series they say "gotcha?" That would be a kick.

Re: Penn & Teller: Bullshit! Recycling
Recycling reduces waste, and is therefore worth the cost.

Sure making plastics from scrap is cheaper, but what happens to the plastics when we're done with them?

Creating biodegradable plastics would be even better because then we would not have to worry about waste. Scientists are working on creating plastics that will biodegrade in sea water.

Re: Penn & Teller: Bullshit! Recycling
Interesting but I'm still going to recycle aluminum cans. They're easy to shred and smelt to be reused. In fact I'd say many metals are reclaimable. They didn't mention anything about that. But I should still get some kind of refund for the trouble.

But i'm not certain about other materials such as plastic and paper.

As far as I know, there are many different types of plastics and many of which are nonrecyclable (and the recyclable still makes crap). And paper recycling is a wasteful process that creates low quality products. Better to just incinerate and reclaim the carbon (somehow).

Just my 2cents

Actually, they do mention that aluminum cans are worth recycling.

I hate Penn & Teller with a passion - they should be called Supercilious and Sanctimonious, though I grant that if they lost the attitude their entertainment value would plummet - but their subject matter this time around hooked me. It was a very interesting segment, thanks for the link!

Perhaps you're interested to know that Penn and Teller have deliberately chosen to use lots of profanity. If they would just present the facts (and calling obvious frauds just that: frauds or liars), they run a much higher risk of being sued and having to cough up a lot of money. Now, the Law interprets Penn and Teller's sayings as opinions only, instead of slander.
