The series was cancelled by FOX after 14 episodes, of which the last three never even aired. Still the eleven first episodes created such a huge fanbase that they formed a whole movement of protest in the internet against FOX' behavior. Because of the fans' constant fight for "Firefly" and the crew of the Serenity, three years later Whedon was allowed to make a motion picture called "Serenity" to finish the story.
