Body Shock: The Half-Ton Man
This documentary opens with paramedics removing a wall of Patrick Deuel's house in Valentine, Nebraska and transporting him six hours to a hospital where he spent months trying to lose weight to qualify for a gastric bypass operation.
The Half-Ton Man also tells the story of other heavily overweight people and their loved ones, neighbors and doctors. It examines how they got that way and how they have succeeded and failed in their struggles to change.
RT: 50 minutes.

Re: The Half-Ton Man
I'm aware of M & C's rules concerning what links cross boundaries and such. The Half-Ton Man doesn't make fun of these people. Rather, it is dead serious. I hope it's worth your time.

Re: The Half-Ton Man
Not pretty, by a long shot. And I can't suggest that there is much in the way of compassion for Patrick in this documentary, but there is also no deep ridicule of his appetite.
All that said? It's jaw-droppingly interesting to watch.
FYI, I have a friend who got that gastric bypass surgery. She lost a lot of weight but it also presented many problems. A couple of crackers and a half can of soda was enough to fill her up for hours. She has to take multivitamins for the rest of her life. Eating too much is painful for her. It's not pretty but she's a shitload healthier than she used to be. And people treat her a lot differently now that she's closer to what many consider to be a reasonable weight.

Good doctor. He laid down the law and said you will do what I say in the hospital. The doc also said the man's diet consisted mostly unhealthy foods with little if any fruit and vegetables and no exercise. Yes, genetics may play a factor but the primary issue here is poor diet and lack of physical activity. Secondardy would be the family and loved ones who enable the cycle to continue as you can see from his wife catering to the diet of rich fatty foods.

Re: The Half-Ton Man
You do NOT get that big without effort.
On the bright side, I beleive the guy went on to loose 100s of pounds and started taking care of himself.
Yes, there were enablers, but at least something was done.
