Depending on where you live and what the bus is like, I would probably rather put a gun to my head.

There's quite a bit more to it than that. Though your simplistic and juvenile explanation of this exceedingly impressive stunt is endlessly amusing (and rather touching).

Re: Derren Brown - Russian Roulette
Derren Brown is an excellent showman and illusionist, but he is a master at subliminal suggestions. He does this in almost all his 'stunts'. In fact he even openly admits that he does this.
In this case he was betting on the hopes that his suggestion to the other guy would sink in and in effect Darren would control where the guy put the bullet.
As I watched this I knew that the bullet was going into chamber #1 as soon as Derren said
"Are you thinking of ONE now?" and "Is it going into the correct ONE?".
If you ever watch another Derren Brown video/show make a note that EVERYTHING he says is said for a specific meaning. He never says anything by accident.
He has a couple excellent snippets about subliminal suggestion like reversing the tables on the marketing ad guys, and the zombie shooter video game guy that wakes up to think he's still in the game. Just an incredible ability.

Re: Derren Brown - Russian Roulette
Human beings are not as susceptible to subliminal influence as you think. Dozens of publications have examined the effects of subliminal messages, and most (if not all) concluded that its effects were mild at best.
I believe Darren uses the common belief that we're all unconsciously influenced by hidden messages to the advantage of his gig.
This stunt probably has more to do with locating the bullet by pulling back the trigger slightly to look into the hole the firing pin strikes the cartridge through (as he does a couple of times).

"I believe Darren uses the common belief that we're all unconsciously influenced by hidden messages to the advantage of his gig."
In other words, you are saying that suspense is a tension and a resolution, the latter is always the discovery of something we already know, and in this case something planted there. Very much like that which you critique, who claimed that Darren planted the word ONE without the participant realizing it -- this likeness doesn't make it wrong btw. Darren Brown would then be -- not a genuine manipulator -- but a manipulator of manipulation, manipulating the ways that manipulation occurs. Incidentally, it may be compared to reality porn, porn always being about manipulation, or perhaps anything having to do with women. I can only watch Bangbus, for example, because only that seems credible or not fake, but of course, even that is still planted.
What you are doing is halting a regime of study where this act can be reflected on for evidence on a subconscious event (of cause and effect) and proposing that the manipulation extends to the very planting of that regime. In general, we are always within a regime of manipulation, blindly finding things that have already been planted, but not by a person or a human agency. (So we are not conspiracy theorists!) Whatever labor we propose (even what you propose) is always a digging up of something that is already there -- the key is to think beyond the Darren Brown as a person or a mastermind, but perhaps of the media itself.
