Barbarians - The Brainy Barbarians
RT - 58:41. Hosted by Terry Jones of Monty Python fame. Episode 3 of 4.

So you think you know everything about the Romans? They gave us sophisticated road systems, chariots and the modern-day calendar. And of course they had to contend with barbarian hordes who continually threatened the peace, safety and prosperity of their Empire. Didn't they?

Terry Jones' Barbarians takes a completely fresh approach to Roman history. Not only does it offer us the chance to see the Romans from a non-Roman perspective, it also reveals that most of the people written off by the Romans as uncivilized, savage and barbaric were in fact organized, motivated and intelligent groups of people, with no intentions of overthrowing Rome and plundering its Empire.

Actually, isn't the modern solar calendar the invention of the Aztecs? Or was that the Mayans? Somewhere in Mexico/Central America, I thought anyway.

Re: Barbarians - The Brainy Barbarians
The Aztecs were very much like the Romans (how appropriate for this topic): A warrior culture who invented very little, adapting for themselves what they looted from other peoples. It was the Mayans who invented the solar calendar.

It was also the Mayans who "discovered" the mathematical concept of the number zero, yet around the same time, so did the Hindus. In a similar fashion, the idea of the solar calendar popped up elsewhere, independently. It's actually very hard for a good idea to stay hidden from everybody for too long.
