Though I very much agree with her sentiment here, I still generally dislike her. Yes, I laughed at this clip and gave it 4*. Maybe it's her delivery. Maybe it's her whiny voice but more often than not I'll flip the channel when she comes on.

Re: Wanda Sykes on Gay Marriage
Yeah, I agree that Wanda has been the cause of one or two shift channel hops in my day.

She is right in that gay marriage doesn't really affect other marriages. But I think people vote against gay marriage because they feel it's immoral not because they feel it affects marriage as a whole. I think the train of thought is if what someone believes is immoral is voted in as a right then other immoral things would be voted in as a right turning into a snowball effect. At least that's the only way I can see it from an outside perspective.

Re: Wanda Sykes on Gay Marriage
This is, indeed, the reasoning. The only problem is that it conflicts with the concept of a free country. There are people who believe that drinking alcohol is immoral, people who believe that watching movies is immoral, and people who believe that driving an SUV is immoral. They would certainly like to legislate these matters, but they cannot do so merely because they don't like them. They have to argue that these things actually hurt others. As someone once famously said - "you have the right to swing your fist however you wish, but that right ends somewhere in the vicinity of my nose." Alcohol was once made illegal, based on the very legitimate tally of the lives it has ruined. The people who would like to outlaw SUVs point at global warming as their evidence against them. The fundamentalists, thus, have to find someone who is harmed by gay marriage, and so they have to insist that the very nature of their marriages is harmed when people unlike themselves are allowed to participate. If it were only a matter of them finding homosexuality immoral, they wouldn't have a basis for complaint.

Re: Wanda Sykes on Gay Marriage
I fail to see how two same-sex partners marrying would harm "the nature" of a third party's marriage. (Not that I hold marriage in very high esteem, to tell the truth). I think we should be able to live and let live, if other people's choices do not limit -or infringe upon- our own.

Which reminds me of a very good definition of the word "puritan": It's a person (??) who has the nagging sensation that someone, somewhere, is actually havin' fun.

Peace.

Re: Wanda Sykes on Gay Marriage
I don't like gay marriage, I think it's counter-evolutionary. However, who gives a flying f%&k what I think. If two people love each other...git 'er dun

Re: Wanda Sykes on Gay Marriage
But, with the very real threat of overpopulation, not breeding is in our interest. Since straight couples tend to contribute to overpopulation more than gay couples, at this point straight couples are "counter-evolutionary."

Re: Wanda Sykes on Gay Marriage
Yeah but gay couples still want babies (which i find ironic) and manage to get them from other straight couples or in laboratory and science will continue to find new ways. So they are as responssible for the overpopulation than any other.

Re: Wanda Sykes on Gay Marriage
Yeah, check your facts there. It's a small percentage of us gays who want children.

Re: Wanda Sykes on Gay Marriage
Well speaking of counter evolutionary, wouldnt modern medicine and some surgeries be considered counter evolutionary as well? Allowing people with genetic heart defects or diseases like diabetes, that people without medical assistance would probably succumb to, instead thrive and pass on their genetic material. Just a point that counter evolutionary doesnt mean bad. I dont really care what gay people do, I do have issues with gay couples adopting children though. Maybe because its proven that kids without a mother and father figure are more prone to have issues later on. Then again, is being adopted by a less than ideal couple better than never being adopted at all? Tricky business.

Re: Wanda Sykes on Gay Marriage
Speakiing of....ten or so years ago I used to live next door to two lesbian Marines who had an adopted son. Now I don't know how the kid turned out but I do know that those two used to beat the crap out of each other almost weekly.
