As much as I respect Hitchens, boy oh boy does he ever like to hear his own voice.

True. I've never seen someone so openly impressed with himself, and not be displaying it as part of a shtick.
Nevertheless, you have to admit that the transparency of his ego is consistent with his core values. The guy passionately believes a person should hold nothing back (as he states). To not be forward and completely unregulated is what is most offensive.
Like it or not, one has to at least respect the determined honesty of the man.
Sure, this unique attitude can help get you noticed in the world, but it can also bring a lot of grief and loneliness. Not everyone has the strength to handle the truth; especially pure uncut truth.
I think it takes courage to stay firm and constant, with regard to honesty. Sometimes, those that can pull it off will earn a degree of quiet admiration from others (Dr House, Triumph the Insult Comic dog, Carlin, Satan). They seem to be free from the unnecessarily constraints of niceness or other BS agendas. What ya see is what ya get. I think that's rare in this day and age. Can be quite refreshing.
