Can someone explain this one to me? They look like 50p coins, so the scam's not related to the total pence balanced. Is it that "in 30 seconds" can be interpreted to mean it doesn't matter how many coins they balance, since it's technically one pound per 30 seconds, regardless? If so, I don't think most English speakers would agree this means they lose the bet, since the context is clearly something else, and rules of grammar here aren't definitive. Maybe I'm missing something obvious, and it'll dawn on me after I've slept on it.

The bet was that he'd give them 1 pound for every 50p they balanced. The wording turns it into a trade.
