Re: National Geographic: Holy War, Inc.
I didn't watch the whole thing, because it's 9:45 here, so if it has some major twist so that it's message isn't clearly stated in the begining, please tell me, because I'm about to blam this.
I know that Muslims are more common international terrorists. Zealots+weapons=BAD But still, Terrorism has been around since civilization. It's just a 'problem' now because weapons are cheaper and they can do more damage. It's just another fact of life. Technology improves. Technology is neither good nor evil, it just increases the amount of good or evil we can do. We have so much technology now, that so few people can do so much, in this case, evil. The Muslims in certain areas are feeling threatend by outside powers so now they are retailiating more. Think about it. The middle east has a buttload of oil, something we need. Since WWII the middle east has been a hotspot for conflict. There is now conflict there that america has not been a part of since then. America and Britian installed Saddam, the Shah, and even dumped the Jews there.
Not to be insensitive. But the creation of Isreal was less for them and more for us. The jews were essentialy "homeless" for the past +thousand years. They were foreigners to everyone, and people just natrualy dislike foreigners. The Muslims just saw this as us dumping a problem on them.
Back to good reasons why they hate us. Durring the cold war, the Muslims were just used to fight the wars between the US and CCCP. They liked us in Afgahnistan, but hated us in Iran. (Notice they always sided against the agressor or oppressor.) All they wanted was to be left alone. Now that the CCCP is not a problem for them any more, we are the only ones oppressing them. And now since they are our only real enemies now, we portray them as the scum of the earth, to provoke national unity. (illusion to 1984 about to come) We have now switched from East asia to Eurasia. (Oh well done! except that we actually beat the soviets and the fighting is serious not simple skirmishes.)
Anyways we have been oppresing them horribly for the past half century and their only way to strike back effectivly is by bringing the fight to our home, were the media can't control it.
P.S. Likening Al queda to Islam is like Likening the Ku Klux Klan to Christianity. You just can't say it's a legit representation.

Re: National Geographic: Holy War, Inc.
But you CAN draw comparisons between extreme Fundamentalist Christianity to the KKK, because they are in fact related. The same is true with extreme fundamentalist Islamic teaching and Al Qaeda. That's essentally all the first five minutes are doing.
I didn't realize Bin Laden was involved with Somalia. That was really enlightening. He's a bit more prolific than I'd assumed. Also, that concept of using people who haven't even ever heard of Bin Laden or is organization to actually carry out most of the attacks - say what you will, but that is strategic genius on a level of cynicism that would leave Sun Tzu gaping in awe.
Overall a very fascinating person... for a psychopath.
