Re: The Beginner's Guide to Scientology
I admit that I don't respect follower of any organized faith, but at least Scientologists don't abuse women or go 'killing in the name of'. Scientology is a cult full or hilariously delusional people - NOT murders. So, I say cut the poor idiots some slack.
Though I do find it to be amusing when other religious types take the piss at Scientology. It's like a retard telling a moron he's stupid.
I think the only religions that have earned some slack are Hinduism, Paganism and professional sports.
Hmmm...no, i think professional sports goes to far. I say we start burning all sports team merchandise right now !

Re: The Beginner's Guide to Scientology
The problem people have with scientology is not that it helps people deal with their problems, as in the auditting technique, rather, it is the gobbledeegook space-alien bullcrap eschatology, the secretness and exclusivity of its rituals, and the fact that the church of scientology is a huge scam so that its members can hide their money and avoid taxes.

Re: The Beginner's Guide to Scientology
Minus the the sci-fi elements, you just described every other organized faith. Please, Scientology is only a little more insane than the others. What upsets so many folks is that it is new to the scene, not Christian, and has a solid footing in the media (dumbass actors, musicians etc).
ALL organized faith is a scam, man. They are all designed to take from the masses, to give to the highest tiers. So what if one claims 'the savior' is a man from the sky, while the other claims it is a space man. It's all pretty damn stupid.

Some Christians through the ages have done some very bad things. The whole "killing in the name of" that you talk about. But I think its interesting to note that the Crusades didn't happen until around 1000 years after the Christian church was founded and we wouldn't have to face Jerry Falwell for a long time after that. But the terrible things the "Church" of Scientology has done occurred within decades of its founding.
I'm not going to get into the pointless trench warfare of trading arguments back and forth as to whether God, Jesus, Christianity and so forth are true because I'm sure you've heard pretty much every argument I could tell you and I've heard every Atheist argument before and neither of us has been convinced to change either of out minds on the subject. However, the stuff Scientology has been doing since the beginning would be like if the Inquisition was carried out by Paul the Apostle and this is simply not the case. You can always argue that people later on are missing the message and they are being true to the faith when they kill in the name of religion, but when the individuals involved with its founding are doing this kind of stuff, you know something is up. So, read the links, murder, kidnapping, intimidation, that's the kind of thing leaders within Scientology do.

Re: The Beginner's Guide to Scientology
I never get into a religious debate unless there is some incentive in it for me. Like...$50 bucks...or a round of drinks or...or a free lunch, perhaps. Otherwise, I really don't care what the other side thinks. I'm just here to write my opinions and have a giggle (sorry).
Furthermore, religion isn't something I ever research or investigate. Why bother? To me it's like craft making: something other people care to do. I have no interest...
...but, if i were to check out your links, can you validate their authenticity? Will I be exposed to 'hard evidence' or simply just accusations and exaggerated slander? I know Evangelicals and Catholics have some choice stories about one another.
Don't worry, i know Scientology is a bad organization like i know G W Bush is a bad leader. I just don't need some internet documentary to teach that to me. I use my Dog given common sense to come to that revelation (pardon the pun).

Re: The Beginner's Guide to Scientology
Well EViLMind, I'm a poor college student so I can't offer you any money to debate with me, which is a good thing since apparently neither of us care to do so. I guess I was trying to get into a discussion of sorts about religion and such things, but that's more about people's behavior with regards to their beliefs. I guess that's different from debating as to whether God is or is not real because the latter is an unwinnable argument for either side.
Nevertheless, I do see your point about your lack of interest leading to your lack of research. I don't spend a lot of time reading about vegan recipes myself as that is an area of which I have no interest.

is a copy of an interview from Penthouse Magazine with L. Ron Hubbard Jr. who talks about his father and the founding of Scientology. L. Ron was a pretty twisted individual and I'll sum it up in two words: recreational abortions.
I don't know how familiar you are with he study of history, but the L. Ron Jr. article is a primary source in that he was there for the events in question which makes it a valuable source. For those interested in such things that is.
So yes, I would consider that link to be a valid source, not me saying, "I'm a Christian and Scientology's evil because it isn't what I believe."
And your pun is forgiven, but do not count on being called EViLMinD the Revelator anytime soon.

Re: The Beginner's Guide to Scientology
The thing is , Scientology is known (by most people) to be complete horse dung. I wonder what L. Ron Hubbard is thinking as he looks down and realizes what he has done. He might be laughing...Then again he might feel ashamed...Who knows...Hey Tom Cruise and Beck , Give the church another $500k. You will be better off. *laugh*

Re: The Beginner's Guide to Scientology
I know what L. Ron Hubbard would do if he were to realize what he has achieved: open a few more bank accounts.
Re: The Beginner's Guide to Scientology
Is there any truth to the rumor that Scientology itself was nothing more than the result of a bet that L.Ron had with his friend? He hated organized religion and the fact that religious organizations were tax exempt, so in protest he wanted to prove that he could do it too.

Re: The Beginner's Guide to Scientology
You're referring to the famous bet Hubbard supposedly made with Robert Heinlein, I think. Well, that might be just a rumor, or perhaps not. However, other writers (and editors) also reported that Hubbard made remarks as to organized religion lending itself for making a fast buck. Example: Theodore Sturgeon.
Whether true or false, my opinion is that religions attract many gullible people - and those shrewd people preying on them. Naturally, religions also attract people who want to see how far they can go, out of sheer curiosity or malice. And, of course, there are those that are just interested, for one reason or another. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Hubbard said (decades ago) that starting a cult (or religion) could make him a rich man.
