Good points, both. This show is more entertainment than it is hard science, so it actually wouldn't surprise me to find out that they blared loud music while pulling the trip wire.

actually they did do that in the full episode and the dung by itself did nothing to the elephant. they then tried it with the mouse again and the same thing happened. the elephant stopped and walked around the mouse.
