Re: Why Debate Dogma?
Ok, I consider myself an atheist. But who is this douche-bag and why the hell do I want to listen to his opinions. This guy is boring, annoying and just loves to hear his own voice. No more headlines on this guy!!! WTF? He's my cure for insomnia.
Re: Why Debate Dogma?
Awww, come on, he pretty funny though this isn't his best. Makes me seem like a moderate. Oh, and for the record what is wrong with the sound of ones own voice, I can talk to myself for hours and not tire of it.

Re: Why Debate Dogma?
Interesting. Someone who actually doesn't like Pat Condell....and isn't a religious twit.
Personally, I think Pat is a fantastic speaker/thinker. I'd place his mind in the same category as George Carlin (a dude who also digs the sound of his own voice). Both are loudmouthed, opinionated and crude; they loath BS and have no confidence in the masses. But what is special about them is that they have hard-ons for hating organized faith. I have a hard time not loving anyone who jumps on a soap box to hurl verbal poop at religion. It's what good people do.
BTW, lyzard, I'm curious to know who your ideal speaker is.

Re: Why Debate Dogma?
First, let me correct you, though not religious, I'm still a twit.
Your comment stings a bit, for if I were religious Carlin would be my god. George Carlin is intelligent raw comedy, if there is such a thing, and his presentation style is unmistakable. He is an entertainer with a message that makes you cry laughing and laugh crying. But enough about how much I enjoy him.
My ideal speaker does not exist, there is none. I work with narrators, both on camera and off, on a fairly regular basis. There are narrators that have found certain niches that they are excellent at, but others fall short...and vice versa I suppose. There are some who do most things well. While I agree with Pat's words for the most part, I was commenting on his boring delivery and forced emotion, dead eyes, boring stance, slightly expressive face. To me, and this is just my opinion, his diatribes feel more like filibustering rather than comedy or argument. I don't find anything shocking in his thoughts, nor do I belly laugh at his jokes. So to me, he's just another bloke who just blah blah blahs....
Again, just a personal taste. Now George Carlin, as awful as his voice is, I can listen to all day, because of his energy and expressiveness. Strip away Pat's "intelligent sounding" accent and you just have one mans opinion put in front of you and if that's going to happen, I at least want to be entertained. So, I suppose I would enjoy hearing Spalding Gray performing Pat Condell's words, were he alive. Now that would be interesting.

Re: Why Debate Dogma?
Well, you certainly do not strike me as a "twit". You are clearly intelligent and anyone who digs Carlin is aces in my book.
Yes, I also think Carlin is in a league of his own. Absolutely.
As for Pat, I think your professional opinion is the problem. You judge the old man on his skilled yet amateur delivery. I see him as just a annoyed old man who is getting a kick out of the buzz his video monologues are getting. Sure, his delivery is not perfect (line read)...but the dude is still pretty damn good. Besides, anyone with a sophisticated accent HAS to be intelligent. Right?
To be honest, I seldom watch Pat's videos from start to finish. I just like to see atheists getting out there and taking the piss at organized religion. It makes me feel all warm inside. Plus, I agree with pretty much everything he says. I also think Pat has made some great points in his video career. Though I never find his 'insight' to be life altering or anything, I still like the way he says some things.
Thanks for the response, dude.

Re: Why Debate Dogma?
My grandfather was an annoyed old man who got a kick out pissing people off, we put him in a home. ;)
My pleasure to respond. I guess I too enjoy the sound of my own voice,...er... the text of my own thought...whatever.
Hey, they're all opinions. If there weren't any that conflicted, what fun would that be?

Re: Why Debate Dogma?
I thought the message was a harsh slap in a way but can't really blame him for it. His messages are short and crude at times but they are to the point and you can either take it or leave it as it is just his opinion, and it's not like he's the founder of Atheism.
I will say that some of the issues he brings up I feel are valid. I do not hold it against anyone to believe in what they want to but religion should not have the handhold it does over societies as it is not logical. It grows old to hear people say 'how can you be 'good' if you do not have religion?' It's like people are trying to tell you that you cannot feel compassion for others and do positive constructive things without thinking of some higher deity that forces you to do it out of fear. I don't buy that and also don't feel religion has any place in how people are judged for crimes or how the structure for governments is laid. One would think with how 'modern' we are, a society could be made where religion is not the cornerstone to living positively, but instead, ethics of commonsense and dignity are.
He's sort of a dreamer when he declares that common people who had problems years ago should have done more. I do think he's got to face the facts himself and realize that it would have just caused more bloodshed. People were burnt, drowned, stoned etc (and some still are) for being heretics and committing 'blasphemous' acts. Now is more the time to do things when these people are not so able to get away with these atrocities. So take it for what it is, his opinion, but I do see where he's coming from here.

Re: Why Debate Dogma?
Oh common, the guy is clearly not a...atheistic...zealot. A little too enthusiastic about sharing his opinion, perhaps, but nothing in the same league as...say Jerry Falwell or some other asshole.
Hmmm
On another note, there sure are a lot of aggressive atheists out there these days. With the rise in religion, I think it makes the world a little more exciting. However, I doubt we will ever see suicide atheist bombers or...atheists voting for politicians that will block gay marriage.
anyway...blah blah blah...

While I don't agree with him, I do enjoy his videos.
I enjoy his perspective and I like to hear about his view point.
I find it important to hear other viewpoints and I find he delivers it well.
