It's a brilliant film, which, I believe, didn't do well with the masses initially.

It got excellent critical attention, but the box-office reception was poor.
And indeed, in 1994 there was Forrest Gump, too, and don't forget Pulp Fiction.

Most people discovered it when it went to video. It's one of the all time home video/DVD success stories.
