In an interview I heard with Brewer And Shipley, they said they couldn't believe it when they were asked by Welk's people if they could do the song on the show. They figure the "Sweet Jesus" reference convinced them that it was a "modern spiritual" as Lawrence put it. They kept tongue in cheek and gave their permission.
