How Evolution Really Works
Evolution is the product of Natural Selection AND Mutation. Either alone does nothing.
Evolution is the logical outcome of the world around us. Organisms that store their genetic information in DNA are guaranteed to have mutations. Mutation produce NEW variation. Reproducing organisms are guaranteed to compete for resources. Competition between variable organisms leads to natural selection, i.e. those organisms that possess variation that gives then an advantage will out compete those who don't. Organisms with deleterious variation will lose to all other organisms. In this way the ENVIRONMENT SELECTS the best organisms, which has the effect of passing beneficial mutations on to the next generation and removing deleterious ones. Over time natural selection will lead to a net shift in the genome of the population, i.e. evolution.

Re: How Evolution Really Works
Not that I believe in God, but what if a supreme being created the environment where all this could occur? Believing in God is not placing blinders on and ignoring reality. Listening to various clerics who espouse that evolution is wrong (when there is nothing that states as much in any scripture that I know of), is going through life with the blinders on.

Re: How Evolution Really Works
I agree completely. Theistic evolution is entirely possible.

Re: How Evolution Really Works
A lot of things are entirely possible. That doesn't mean I believe with conviction that those things actually happened.

Re: How Evolution Really Works
Man has visibly evolved since he started recording history. Our minds today are capable of far more and our bodies far less than those of our ancestors even 300 years ago. To think mankind hasn't changed even more so over the thousands of years he's crawled over the earth is just ridiculous. It has nothing to do with religion. And frankly, this god fellow is supposed to be all knowing, so he of all people would know that a creature that cannot evolve to adapt to his changing environment is doomed to extinction. That doesn't sound like a terribly loving god to me. It's not people's fault that their clergy men are rigid and uneducated, I wish a lot more people could step back from their icons and their places of worship and their books and see the big picture.

Re: How Evolution Really Works
I can buy Natural Selection, but for evolution to be entirely correct, you have to have a beginning where life "mutated" out of nonlife...which seems alittle farfetched.

Re: How Evolution Really Works
I suggest watching this clip from Ricky Gervais' stand up "Animals". He talks about the bible and how god created life. It's very funny and kinda makes you wonder
