Not Working?
Collateral news talks about a place in the north east pacific ocean, where there is a huge deposit of floating plastic covering an area more then twice the size of Texas.

Re: The Plastic Vortex
I know the closing statement was a rhetorical question (What is the argument for accepting that?), but it needed to be said:
The argument is the profit margin of the makers of plastic containers and those who buy from them.
But hey, even a rat doesn't shit it's own bed. Us humans?

Re: The Plastic Vortex
If the speaker in this video was really serious about this subject, he would have noticed a few things before going on camera:
The buttons on his shirt: plastic
The micropone clipped to the neck of his shirt: plastic
His shoes: Crocs, which are 100% plastic
Nice job. Nothing kills an activist's message faster than a little hypocrisy.

Re: The Plastic Vortex
I dunno. That seems like a pretty weak argument to counter the fact that there's all this garbage out there that we are all part of. Even IF we wanted to not consume plastic, is that possible in the current state of affairs?
Granted he comes off a bit abrasive, but if this guy was in a 100% hemp shirt with drawstring pants and no shoes would you take him more seriously? Would it make the problem less problematic? A lot of environmental and third world activism is done by network and computers. The majority of all computer parts are made in sweat shops, and computers are a huge source of pollution and energy waste. Does that make any argument made by computer hypocritical? I think we need to start looking at these issues on a societal level, rather than just an individual one. If only the people completely without sin speak out, then we're all doomed.

Re: The Plastic Vortex
Oh I'm not countering his argument at all. It's a hellacious problem, and I don't deny it's existence or severity.
I was making the point that if you're going to make a video of yourself to tell people that, for example, eating meat is horribly wrong, you might want to be sure your shirt isn't covered in little bits of bacon and that your shoes aren't made of leather. You won't be taken as seriously.
I don't expect the man to be a full-on hippy in a homemade hemp dress, but don't tell me how awful plastic is while wearing plenty of it yourself. The message gets diluted.

Re: The Plastic Vortex
I can't even begin to list the problems with this guy's delivery, his logic, ... um the validity of his tagline "unfiltered news" ? unfiltered in that he's still telling what to think and not simply reportinng?
I'm behind this guys message but his soapbox is a tall one and the resulting logical nosebleeds makes him look like a fool to anyone with any critical reasoning at all.

Re: The Plastic Vortex
I only posted it to inform people of the plastic problem, not for his personality. ;-)
Re: The Plastic Vortex
right. didnt intend any of that to be directed towards yourself - just my two cents.
