I've always said that it would be most convenient to be able to 'remove' the 'where do I place this?' arm until one awakes refreshed in the morning.

you can also position yourself and your parter in a Y, so that the 'front' person is bending forward and the 'back' person is bending a bit backwards. This frees up space between the heads with enough room for an arm, while your lower bodies are still touching.
