I tried this and it was not very effective. Every song I tried sounded horrible.

I agree. It all depends on how the song was mixed. Still, it was a nice tutorial and I gave it a 5 anyway. Hey, mebbe we get some more folks supporting open source applications like this.

Audacity is probably the best free audio editor, but it doesn't compare well to the commercial software IMO.

There are a few other free programs that do this. This way of doing it is the manual way. All the programs that do it are basically doing this to your tracks so if it doesnt work with this then another program probably wont fix it. As someone else said it depends 100% on how the song was mixed. You will tend to find songs from the same album most likely remove vocals well if 1 song does.

I tried it and it doesn't sound that great. It DID remove the vocals but your left with a crappy sounding version of the song. But I understand it's not going to sound perfect. Been using audacity for years, great free proggy. I use it to capture audio from my old cassette tapes and convert to mp3.
