He's a douche cause he got pissed off at a guy for ruining a desk custom made for the show? I think the fact that despite being pissed, he still let the guy perform shows that he wasn't being a douchebag. Yeah sure there were snide comments, but the guy just f'ed up his desk, so what do you expect. And before you say he couldn't take what he himself dishes out, I don't recall him ever destroying other people's property. Being an ass and annoying people, for sure. But not destroying their stuff. (However, I could be wrong)

i mostly agree with you there, BUT it seems (to me) that karma (if you will) has snuck right up and BIT HIM IN THE ARSE rather well. that is, the look upon his face when dude cut up his desk = PRICELESS!

Tom just takes the other side.
He kept coaxing the old man on by continuing to talk to him.
Tom didn't have to be on the offensive to be funny, the old man was being ridiculous all by himself.
There are other skits where Tom plays the victim, probably the funniest of his skits.
