Re: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Opening
There is, if only to realize just how truly spot on the film is.
From the direction, casting, writing, cinematography, right on through it is truly a terrific adaptation of a book based on a semi-mad semi-lucid dope dream in the desert. Not sure anyone other than Gilliam's crazy enough to have even tried to stay true to the book.
Depp developed a friendship with Thompson while prepping for the film (his character is Thompson's alter ego), and many people have said that only someone who'd taken so much trouble to know him could get it right.
It's much more interesting to read Thompson's stuff if you know about him and "gonzo" journalism. It puts it all into the correct, distorted, perspective. He's definitely worth the read.
