The purpose of extremists is to say the most outlandish things, so the rest of us can feel comparatively moderate. A person may say "hey, I disagree with most rational people about issue X, but at least I'm not coulter/jackson/oreilly/falwell/etc". Indeed, the majority of us consider ourselves moderates.
