how is this song a tribute to syd barrett if he wasn't dead at the time that they wrote it? Was he really that crazy?

I saw a cover band do this song the night Syd Barrett died.

You can pay tribute to someone if they're still alive. Most people seem to think that yes, he was actually that crazy, although he was never officially diagnosed with anything. He actually randomly showed up at the recording of Shine On You Crazy Diamond, with a completely shaved head (including eyebrows). The band couldn't immediately recognize him.

I always thought that Pink Floyd was a lot better off without Barrett, but I guess I have to give him credit for being one of the original members.
