Flares, aka coronal mass ejections, are potentially the most dangerous threats to life on our planet. Most often, they only cause spotty (sorry for the pun) radio interference. Other times, they have caused vast electrical power interruptions. One large enough to distort the magnetosphere of our planet could conceivably send the atmosphere into the cosmos.
