Re: God Bless Atheism
It's funny, and it really does point out how odd it is that so many people believe negative stereotypes about atheists. I'd say I'm an agnostic right now, but I agree with most of what he said.
The problem is that fairly early on he says religion=evil, which may shut some people off of his message. He amends it at the end, but most evangelicals I know would close it in disgust at that point.
It honestly scares me that theists believe we only behave because of divine negative and positive incentives. Civilization cannot function without morality, nor could the precursor, hunter-gatherer groups. Sociopaths would be weeded out because they don't help the group as much as they should, leading to them being ostracized or killed.
Back when I was a Christian and told a Christian Club I was coerced into joining that I didn't believe in hell, the teacher sponsoring the group got angry and asked me if I wanted to live in a world where people didn't have to be afraid of Hell. I told him that I felt morality was innate, but he ignored me and went about describing the heathenish world of rape and murder that would emerge. If that's his plans if he ever decides there isn't an Almighty, I actually hope "The God Delusion" gets banned.

Re: God Bless Atheism
hi jaxon, I enjoyed your video :)
I currently use the word 'nontheist' to define my belief. I think that theology should be taught in schools as dry facts (where the fact is that some people believe thus and so), teaching all major theologies - christianity, islam, judaism, budism, and also introduce students to atheism.
Theist religion is a belief the same way as atheism is a belief. nobody knows that god does not exist because it cannot be proven. you, as well as I, believe in atheism. it would be wrong, in my opinion, to teach children that atheism is 'the truth' and theism is fantasy, because a- you can't prove it, and b- you don't want to teach children to unquestionably accept what unproven theories they are told, as reasonable as they may sound at the time. That's what theology is about.

Re: God Bless Atheism
Similarly, we cannot disprove that a giant magical bunny rabbit lives at the core in the middle of the earth, however that doesn't mean I'm going to teach children that it's a possibility. What will be taught is that the core is made up of liquid and solid iron, as deduced by a multitude of observable facts.
Quite simply, ludicrous claims with no evidence will be tossed aside in favour of realistic ideas about the world.

Re: God Bless Atheism
There actually are Hollow-Earthers. Some believe there may be a gigantic hole in the arctic that leads to the center of our empty planet. It's more rational than the Flat Earth Society, so I guess that's a borderline good thing.

Re: God Bless Atheism
I hear the whole "this discussion is pointless because god cannot be proven/disproven" all the time, and I can't help but feel my stomach churn every time I hear it.
What people don't understand is that this isn't a battle between atheism and religion. It's a battle between logical beliefs/facts and illogical beliefs. Atheism isn't an end in itself - it results from rational thought and observation of reality. That's why atheists, such as myself, can easily back up their beliefs with sound facts and logic. Whereas religious beliefs are founded on faith - which is a nice word for "this is what I was taught as a child and I'm too scared/lazy/stubborn to actually question my beliefs, so I'll just assume everyone else is wrong."
Furthermore, while I can't disprove the existence of some kind of supreme being until I have searched the entire universe, I can disprove the existence of a personal god (i.e. the god(s) of pretty much every major religion) with just a little help from science and logic.
And even if I couldn't disprove the Christian/Muslim/Jewish god, it still wouldn't mitigate the fact that entire societies, belief systems, and political factions have been built on something that might not be true. That is, bluntly put, one of the worst mistakes in the history of human kind.

Re: God Bless Atheism
Good lord -- he is kind of a deluded old man ... 'preaching to a choir' would be the right word here. Someone who seriously doesn't reflect on what he does, or encourage any sort of real thinking. For example, what's the point of making up a clever 'rap' about atheism? What's the point of beating a dead horse -- what's the point of throwing yourself out to the ignorant masses, when there are larger questions to tackle -- intimate questions, like -- is the best way to contribute to the world, reallly, to make polemics about 5th grade philosophical questions?

Re: God Bless Atheism
While this video will clearly be accepted more by the atheist/agnostic community, does that reflect poorly on them or the religious community? It's not the guy's fault that a succinct and often times funny clarification of what atheism is falls on deaf ears.
By: MisterJingo
Re: God Bless Atheism
"Preaching to the choir" would be a phrase, not a word. But that aside, where did you find him to be delusional?

Re: God Bless Atheism
Wait, whats the point of this message. He is trying to cut down Christianity or trying to get people to convert to Atheism? And last time I checked public schools don't even teach anything about Christianity. Quite the oppesite. Oh well.

Re: God Bless Atheism
I don't understand why you think he is targeting Christianity. Islam and Judaism also fall into the category of currently popular monotheistic worship.
Although not mentioned in this video, religion does impose on (American) public education. God is still a part of the Pledge of Allegiance (even though the original pledge does not contain "under God"). Creationists are still pushing for equal time to explain their "scientific theory" of the origin of man in the science classroom, after all it's only fair that every theory be given equal time, regardless of merit.
*cough* Mendelian evolution *cough* Pastafarianism *cough*

Re: God Bless Atheism
He does have some points right but others are off, mainly smaller details.
The whole "anything religion does is evil" is false. There are two reasons why religion is created
1 to scare people into being moral and reward them when they are. Which, i see, as not a bad thing, there are an infinite amount of stupid people in the world and if it wasn't for religion their lives would be "Short nasty and brutish" - hobbes
2 and also to keep people in a structured soceity.
An easy example is hinduism. The two big parts of hinduism is karma and dharma. Karma is what you do in this life will follow into the next, the first reason. Dharma is your duty. You were born into this caste because of what you did in your past life and this is what you deserve. This keeps the lower class to accept its position. (side fact hinudism is not polytheistic it is the many faces of the same god brahmin, think of it as father son and holy ghost except with millions of incarnations.)
The largest problem with religion though is that it makes people close their mind. If you have a open mind but not fully trusting, you can filter through the bullshit. Islam actually is more open minded than Christianity, and is a very peacefull religion, he called it violent. its just that the last laws muhammed made were things like "you most destroy the enemy at all costs" which contradict with what he said before. Most muslims ignore that part. it only seems like all of them choose it because the ones that do get all the attention.

Re: God Bless Atheism
Wow, a self-righteous atheist. Granted, a lot of religion deserves a big punch in the face. However, this guy is an atheistic version of everything wrong with religion; arroagant, condescending, judgmental, self-righteous, pompous etc. He's bascially become everything he hates about religion. Did he say that atheists don't gert punished for not submitting to a belief system? Whatever. Any atheist would be ridiculed, dogged and discriminated against by other atheists is he diverged from their presuppositions. Most theists doubt their theism. That said, I'm sure many atheists doubt their own atheism at times. Funny. Although I appreciate his honesty and whit, it's just a personal rant and rave that fails to address issues of upmost concern. "I have a British accent, therefore I'm brilliant and people will listen to me."

Re: God Bless Atheism
He makes some valid points about how Christians and many of monotheistic religions view atheists. Atheists are the biggest threat to the monotheistic faiths because of the evidence that 1. we do not need a God, heaven or hell to be decent moral people that are genuinely benevolent and 2. we are able to approach information and data, and what we do not know, we can leave as an unanswered question until that answer hits us. People do not have to live in fear to be good people. People can be good because they feel in their own hearts it is right. I do disagree that religion should not be taught in universities, but I do get sick of the Christian groups there that try to force others to join with the old adage that your soul is in danger. If being a decent human being gets you nowhere in the afterlife, believing in some God isn't going to either.
