George Carlin: Who owns you?
George Carlin speaks the truth about your country that nobody seems to notice and/or to care. Complete with illustrations for dummies.

Re: George Carlin: Who owns you?
I thought this stand-up was lame too.
I am quite aware and have been aware of the state of our country. I like comedy because its a form of escape. I don't
want to hear someone bitch about something unless they have some real solutions. Now if its funny bitching, unlike this Carlin routine, thats a different story.

Re: George Carlin: Who owns you?
wow, i got real bored reading down through these posts, so i came back to the top. yup, old george has become more of an angry old hippie ranter than a comic of late. he is still my favorite though and will always be funny to me, despite my disagreements with him. he says our vote, choice, is illusion and that we are owned. that is weak and irresponible. We choose what we buy and who we allow in office, and we have choosen to be cattle. so laugh or say moo.

Re: George Carlin: Who owns you?
Carlin's unfunniest stand-up to date. He needs to sit down & shut up. He's done. He's losing it.
Check that. He's LOST it.
The illustrations? Who did that, a fifteen-year-old? Sorry, but this is very, very lame.

Re: George Carlin: Who owns you?
Much like Lenny Bruce, he became a whole lot more political and views his microphone as a soapbox as he grows older. But there is a shitload more than an element of truth in what both had to say.
The illustrations bother you? I didn't particularly love them either. No big deal. At least Pfizer, GE, AOL-Time-Warner or Viacom didn't make them up.

Re: George Carlin: Who owns you?
Carlin *is* pointing out a solution by pointing to the problem. listen to the man. 'You don't think, you don't pay attention, and you don't vote.' Sounds pretty clear.
He's *not* always funny. Someone mis-categorized this as standup and you're sad? boo-hoo. Go watch Yugioh.
He has ALWAYS used the stage as social and political platform- (one of) his most famous bit(s) is "The Seven Words You'll Never Hear on Television". A contemporary of Lenny Bruce, Carlin was arrested right along with him for civil disobedience and lewd & lascivious behavior (aka using "bad language" in public).
Terrible audio/video compression. Can't say I agree with the context, considering what the host site (puppetgov) is all about.

Re: George Carlin: Who owns you?
I assume you are addressing me when you
say someone mis-categorized this as standup. Well I watched the full show from which this clip was taken. George Carlin is supposed to be a comedian, right? So if it wasn't standup, what the hell was it? I am completely aware Carlin has always used the stage as a social and political platform...but he used to be funny. After watching that show I wanted to do the complete opposite of what he said just out of spite. And I don't consider pointing out the obvious a solution.

Re: George Carlin: Who owns you?
Real nice ad-hom. Doesn't change the fact that George Carlin sucks monkey balls nowadays.

Re: George Carlin: Who owns you?
George Carlin defeats his own argument by standing on a stage and telling it to the audience.

Re: George Carlin: Who owns you?
I like George for the most part. But he is only 75% right, 10% misinformed, and 15% full of himself. I would listen to him much more if he didn't use freedom of speech as an excuse to be a foul mouthed B lister.

Re: George Carlin: Who owns you?
I see a lot of negative comments from the peanut gallery here but I dont see the peanut gallery making any attempts to prove George Carlins ideas wrong. Simply calling George Carlin an idot is not a very strong argument.

Re: George Carlin: Who owns you?
Oh, I forgot it was my job to provide you with a statistical analysis breaking down the fine points of George's personality flaws in conjunction with his political and world view points when expressing my opinion that I feel he is not 100% right, 100% of the time.
I'll get right on that.

Re: George Carlin: Who owns you?
Here is why George is wrong . . .
What did the lazy entitled Americans do to get their way ? When and whom did they lobby ? With REAL MONEY ? Lobbyists are there for the buying, and Americans don't hire them, so they shouldn't expect their benefits.

Re: George Carlin: Who owns you?
I'm pretty certain that, in this clip, Carlin isn't trying to be funny. Not even a little.

Re: George Carlin: Who owns you?
I have no idea what this guy is talking about??? You don't need to be educated to be a critical thinker. Even If all of the mass media is owned by big business, what exactly are "they" telling us to do. I'm really going to hear some guy on TV and do everything he says, NOT.
I believe big business is out to make money any way they can. This guy takes it way to far though. He backs up none of the fact thats he's puking out. This is better left to a political discussion on MSNBC or something, not on a stage where everybody will agree with you because they paid to see you perform.

Re: George Carlin: Who owns you?
because he feels its history repeating.
1 : an American capitalist of the latter part of the 19th century who became wealthy through exploitation (as of natural resources, governmental influence, or low wage scales)
2 : a business owner or executive who acquires wealth through ethically questionable tactics
"The true robber barons were those who used political means to enrich themselves and their political cohorts through government subsidies, protective tariffs and government-enforced cartels."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robber_baron_(industrialist)
Long story short, laws went up against these people.
It was a big deal in the 19th century. Im surprised you didnt read about it in your history book. Kinda frightening.

Re: George Carlin on America (and 9/11)
Man, I remember when he was actually funny. What the hell happened to him? That was just feckin' annoying.

Re: George Carlin on America (and 9/11)
This clearly wasn't meant to be ha-ha funny comedy to amuse you like a dancing monkey might entertain a small child.
This is vintage Carlin vitriol, and if its message angers or annoys or makes you uncomfortable, you should ask yourself why.
Because, again, it obviously wasn't meant to be funny or amuse you like a clown. It was meant to make you think. And perhaps act.

Re: George Carlin on America (and 9/11)
Agreed. Carlin has become as much of a pundit as he is a comic, especially in the last 15 years, and this is one such example.
It's far from the first time he has sounded off on the state of the nation, and given the inhabitants and leaders, probably not the last.

Re: George Carlin on America (and 9/11)
Oh, thank yoo four esplaining that to me . I not understand bfore u esplain it me. Now me see error of my opinion. I believe the descriptive term would be didactic. He used to be funny and vitriolic. I've seen him in concert. This just struck me as uninspired ranting, not like his old, clever, spot-on observations, which also happened to be funny. Which I find that much more thought provoking and engaging. But, to each his own.

Re: George Carlin: Who owns you?
I would rather see every "comedian" do bits like this until we get some fuckin decent results and/or motivation from the proletariat in this world.
If the definition of stand-up changes from stand-up comedy that makes me laugh to stand up for your fuckin rights and the rights of people you don't know then I'm all for that, laughter be damned. We can laugh and be happy when the world is not starving and dying.

Re: George Carlin: Who owns you?
Sure, it wasn't that funny except the first part. But the point with George Carlin is to also present some facts and his POV as all comedians and stand ups do. I didn't find it so 'funny' as I did hear the message he's conveying and it is a rather important issue. He delivers it better than most people will.
