Harvard U gets the first robotic fly to take flight on its own. DARPA funds this creature additionally to get the robot to navigate and perhaps weaponize it.

Although ingenious, I would think long term.. a waste of time, money and effort.

The point of these sorts of things isn't really that we plan on using the invention itself (in this case, a robotic fly); the point is the knowledge and technology we pick up along the way (very small robotic and mechanical technology, and probably some interesting stuff in a lot of other fields). So long-term, this is probably a great project.

Yeah, it's not like there have ever been any civilian technologies born of DARPA research that we've benefited from before?
