As a city cyclist, this is the most exciting invention of my lifetime.

I admit it looks cool. But its gotta be high maintenance and how well would it handle collision damage?

Re: Concept Car with Rolling Side Doors
but you cant get out your car as quickly as a normal door. and what if the car battery fails on you... is there a manual way to open the door? otherwise your stuck inside lol.

A bit noisy...makes it difficult to sneak off in the middle of the night...

Re: Concept Car with Rolling Side Doors
Well this is a concept that 1 person (or a few) created...if it were to be massed produced, I'm sure it would be made a lot better...

Re: Concept Car with Rolling Side Doors
Personally I think that's a bad idea, it's not safe.

Right now you open the door to get out of the car, you can look in the mirror before you get out.

Getting out of that wouldn't give you the safety of a mirror, by the time the door opens there's no way of telling what's changed.

What happens in an accident?

I don't think the door would just fall off to allow for an easy exit.

If you open a door now, you have some sort of space. I'd rather deal with accidentally hitting a bike rider, paying for their medical bills, or possibly loosing my door to oncoming traffic.

When your door swings open, it lets traffic know ... hey that dude is getting out of the car, and they can swerve, I'm not so sure this would allow for a sufficient warning.

I hope this does not become mainstream.

Re: Concept Car with Rolling Side Doors
I just wanted to mention that there actually is a production car that offers the same feature. Its the BMW Z1 whicht was presented at the IAA in Frankfurt in 1987. There was a limited number of 8000 cars built, but still it was a production car.

I Live in Germany and you can still see some driving around, even though it's quite rare and they are very expensive.

(I'm not sure how to add a direct link, so you'll have to copy and paste)

this is a video of a Alpina RLE (a tuned up version of the Z1)
