Boring. Isn't "White Guy With Smooth Cover of Rap Song" an old enough cliché that we can put it to bed?

Even his opening "This is for the ladies" banter was old hat.

Re: Jonathan Coulton: Baby Got Back
I agree about the cliche, but Coulton seems to be playing this as a legitimate cover. I've seen him perform, and I don't think he would bother with "Baby Got Back" if he didn't think it had some value. His version brings out the senstive side to a song that I didn't think had one. Taken out of its buffoon-rap conext, parts of it sound as if they are written by a third-year student in a women's studies class.

Re: Jonathan Coulton: Baby Got Back
Firstly, it didn't seem any different or more respectful than any other bullshit rap cover I've heard.

More importantly, though, what the hell is the point of it? To make the song funny? The song WAS funny. Sir Mix-a-lot was already being clever when he released a rap song about fat asses and liking girls with fat asses in the middle of the hey day of g-funk gangsta rap. A parody of a parody is already redundant, but this guy was even worse: He took the humor of the original, which wasn't exactly subtle, and made it even more obvious and blatant. Obvious isn't funny.

Re: Jonathan Coulton: Baby Got Back
I think this song is shitty too... but the reasons are kind of profound. i like where ur going with the parody of parody thing.

Is it because its so goddamn pretentious ... there is something extremely radical about basically musically untrained blacks making hip hop out of speech, samples, gestures, dialects, and sounds ... and to bring it back around, back to the endless stupidity with the guitar and chords and harmony ... a reverse breakdown.

it's not that black music is a parody, nor a rebellion, but there is always some kind of .. perhaps ... 'critical' force behind its extreme 'reductionism', if you want to call it that.

If only people can hate apocalypse now (which is a film version of this song) with just as much passion

"Musically untrained blacks"? "critical force"? "extreme reductionism"?

I'd like to say that I don't know what the hell you're talking about, but, unfortunately, I do. This is just the same racist crap that sees blacks as closer than whites to something primal, and their music and art as primitive but vital. It's an easy trap to fall into, but it's still racism, no matter how much grad-school jargon you wrap around it.

Were you actually black it wouldn't make your ideas any more sound.

Re: Jonathan Coulton: Baby Got Back
Fun. Not so funny. But fun. It arouses feelings of warm recognition, with the folksy chords and familiarity of the lyrics. I liked it.

I won't say that it's pretentious. What might be considered pretentious is rationlizing your likes and dislikes, then trying to get other people to rationlize their likes and dislikes exactly as you have rationalized them.

The same thing happened with the little asian girl covering a classical piece. Don't be so outspokenly disgusted with things that it becomes a downer. Do you talk about this stuff with your friends? Over coffee?

A link on how to deconstruct anything. It makes me wonder how truthful and how useful is unscientific critical thought. There's a reason we're told not to say anything if we can't say something nice. It's because we'll all end up killing ourselves or each other if we were as liberal and unnecessarily malicious with our criticism as half the people on this on this little forum have been. And for what? Rationalized feelings? I didn't mean to be pretentious, too, but you arguers leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Actually, the term is "old hap." But yes, this is a little worn, by now. Thing is, each year there's a new class of college freshmen to rediscover this re-rap genre, and think it's clever all over again.

"Old hap"? I don't think so.

Why the hate?
Man, why the hate people?

I personally love his cover. He's taken a song that was great to begin with and had a good message, and made it far, far more melodic.

There are many like me who love it :)

Re: Jonathan Coulton: Baby Got Back
People are "hating" on this video because it's been seen before. 'Cept done by others. Countless times. Although the guys has talent, he pales in comparison to others like Jamie Cullum, albeit he lacks the comedic element.
