I saw this a few weeks ago and chose not to submit it but still gave it a 6. And to further add to the complexity, I saw Al Bore's movie last week in full for the first time. Didn't particularly care for it.

Welcome to the Democratic Republic of the Internets!
You have a strange concept of democracy, RainbowTrout.
Unfortunately, there is an abundance of evidence to support global climate change. The only folks who refute it also support Intelligent Design because evolution is "just a theory."
But, you know, you're probably right. Global industrialization and the mass consumption of fossil fuels couldn't possibly have any adverse effect on the thin layer of atmosphere that surrounds this planet. None at all. And to suggest otherwise is just plain silly. Or scientific. Depends of your point of view and your degree of mental illness, I suppose.
Wanker.

btw Mr/Mrs short-order, why bring mental illness into this? Are you saying people with a mental illness don't know fact from fiction? right from wrong? And why call someone a wanker for no good reason other than this persons opinion differs from yours?

Re: The Great Global Warming Swindle
the world used to be littered with volcanoes that errupted frequently, was global warming there too ? is that why we had an ice age ? Old geography teacher who took interest in this was of the same opinion as the scientist in this programme, said global warming is a load of bull, but i'm still unsure as to who to believe
By: D3NIS
Re: The Great Global Warming Swindle
When the world was "littered with volcanoes that erupted frequently" there was indeed global warming, and little or no life. For the geologic era in which life as we currently know it has existed on this planet, volcanic activity has been, and continues to be, more or less a constant. On the other hand, human activity on the scale we are familiar with in the modern era is unprecedented in the history of the planet.
Be smart people. There will be inappropriate hyperbole on either side of this debate, but even with no understanding at all of the specific facts, wanton and excessive behavior should always be scrutinized critically. On the smallest and the largest of scales, it rarely had positive results, particularly when sustained so consistently for so long.

Re: The Great Global Warming Swindle
The wikipedia article on the show includes rebuttals to the show, including some examples where its creators got things completely wrong. The article also points out that one of the show's main interviewees claims its producers misled him, then edited his interviews to distort his position.
Re: The Great Global Warming Swindle
When did I say i disproved of the theory of global warming? Merely saying there's too much hysteria i.e. too much talk not enough action, too many hysterical warnings and not enough calm and rationale explanations or offers of solutions. Also Wikipedia is written by users not by any regulated dictionary people, they said the exact same thing about Loose Change when it was released
By: RainbowTrout
Re: The Great Global Warming Swindle
Pardon me, but Loose Change is a totally different animal. Aside from Dylan Avery, Korey Rowe and Jason Bermas, there are few who really act as though the mainstream belief that airplanes struck buildings is not based in fact and reality. Those who act as if greenhouse gasses are not changing climate are also in the minority and/or paid shills of those companies that produce fossil fuels.

Re: The Great Global Warming Swindle
The way I look at global warming is this:
If the 1400 or so Scientists who make up the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change are wrong, then we have lost nothing, and in fact gained a lot by reducing the amount we pollute this planet.
If they are right, then we (and indeed every other lifeform on this planet) have gained everything that ever was, is and will be.
Either way, what is being proposed is a SMALL price to pay.

Re: The Great Global Warming Swindle
i don't understand. they explain that CO2 levels lagged behind temperatures in the past, peaking after the temperatures did, and therefore CO2 cannot possibly cause warmer temperatures. then 5 minutes later they explain that the oceans, which act as carbon sinks, emit more carbon dioxide when they are warmer, and that it takes hundreds of years for oceans to warm up. couldn't this explain how temperatures could peak before CO2 levels? if not, then why? there is no explanation.
this is an inconsistent logic.
and if i remember right, at least one of the interviewees explained that they take samples over not just years or decades, but centuries or ages, in order to measure climate trends. yet they continued to come back to the point that for a few years during the post war boom, the average global temperature decreased. this was touted as evidence that the longer trend, the warming trend over the past 150 years, is rendered moot since for some of that period temperatures did not fit the trend.
this is an incorrect statistical analysis.
next, the argument is made that what is behind the anthropogenic climate change movement are political and economic interests exemplified by thatcher and greenpeace. ahem. furthermore, tens of thousands of jobs and millions of dollars are tied to the idea that manmade climate change being a real problem. ahem.
this, according to mathematical logistical game-agency theory, is termed as 'the pot calling the kettle black.'
lastly, we cannot attribute today's weather patterns and icemelts to manmade global warming. well that's the smartest thing i heard in an hour and a half, and it's very true. we don't know enough to say that today we are experiencing the effects of a manmade trend of global warming, set in motion during the industrial revolution with the unprecedented release of CO2 via coal and oil-fired plants and machines. unfortunately, as we all (should) know, absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.
again, this is just poor logic.
these are examples of how not to think. and yet we are told that 'the global warming alarm is now beyond reason.' if the theory of manmade climate change is so wrong, then why is it so difficult to put together a few good arguments without resorting to falsities and fuzzy logic?
this is not a bad representative of those who would deny global warming. this is the best they've got.
i would say to them, stop wasting your breath.

About the CO2 lag: the point is that current CO2 levels might be due to ocean warming that occured eight hundred years ago and not the industrial revolution. I agree with the rest of your post tho.

Re: The Great Global Warming Swindle
I believe in global warming, but I feel like too many environmentalists want to get proof of it from isolated instances. They want to "see the body" in a situation which is really based more on trends extending over decades. I agree with their complaining about people attributing global warming to isolated weather.
I didn't get a chance to see this. Did they mention that global cooling, mainly caused by emissions from dirty coal plants (very common in China) has been keeping global warming in check? People are always shocked when they hear that, and some of the more utilitarian people wonder why they can't just keep those coal plants running. Of course, coal emissions are loaded with carcinogens and create smog, so that's a horrible solution for the 1 billion+ Chinese.

Re: The Great Global Warming Swindle
I watched this a few weeks ago and thought they made a compelling argument until I did further research and found the criticisms on Wiki etc. I also managed to watch Al Gore's doco too in this time. Again I was impressed, although I thought some of the presentation was a little over the top. Unfortunately, both documentaries have flaws and present data in rather "convenient" ways to support their various claims. In my opinion both presentations fell short of providing a convincing argument either for or against the existence of man-made global warming. And I don't think we will find the answer, within my lifetime at least, maybe ever. I guess you could say I'm agnostic with regards to anthropogenic climate change.
Regardless of whether or not this phenomenon is occurring, my greatest concern is the political intervention and regulations being proposed solely on this unconvincing "hunch". It seems the developed world has no problem telling developing nations to use more expensive "environmentally" friendly forms of energy to develop while they only up-size their combo meals every second day thinking this will save the world. Don't you think this is a little bit hypocritical? It's fine for us to develop burning the fossil fuels but you guys have to use solar panels to power your steel mills. And this all based on a hunch????
What happens in the future if we find out in fact climate change is natural and not due to human activities: "Well sorry about that Africa, I guess we were wrong about that". "Don't worry it was fun cooking my food on animal dung in my hut made of animal dung. Besides I didn't have to endure it for very long - my average life expectancy is only 35 years".
I've got an idea: Why don't all these people/politicians who believe in global warming go and live in these conditions we are forcing these undeveloped nations to endure. Think of it like a "wife swap" but just on a larger scale. Afterwards see how willing these people still are for implementing these proposals.
Environmentalists like to romance the idea of a peasant life-style into one of purity - being one with the environment. It's not - it's a cr@p life-style. If you are really serious about this come and talk to me when you forfeit ALL the luxuries we enjoy as a developed nation. Then and only then may we make a difference.

Re: The Great Global Warming Swindle
i totally agree with tylerdurden. But also if i may add, why are we getting all these taxes put on to our use of cars planes etc, when really neither side has the most concrete undeniable evidence to support their claim ? Shouldn't we, the public, be left alone UNTIL THEY find out whether or not we are causing a climate change then add these, or remove these CO2 emission charges. The way they are charging people for this is ridiculous, where only the rich may travel abroad comfortabley, where only the rich can afford cars, basically keeping the common man down from having such "luxuries". I think its every persons right to have a car, more importantly i find that EVERYONE should be able to travel abroad, as i feel that this may open up peoples minds to other cultures and ways of living and have a better understand of ones fellow man. Am I too much of an optimist ? Do I have too strong of an altruistic view on the world ? Or do you think that having a better understanding of the rest of the world will make us able to have more respect for one another ?

Re: The Great Global Warming Swindle
This is my greatest concern in the issue as well. Even if global warming is real and we do manage to prevent it, Africa will still be screwed and without electricity. What's the point in spending billions of dollars based on research from a field that is known for it's bad track record at prediction when people are dying NOW?

Re: The Great Global Warming Swindle
I feel that this documentory raises some good questions that need to be addressed. I will enumerate them to make it easier to respond:
1) Does the 800 year time lag of temperature change precluding CO2 change mean that CO2 change does not cause temperature change?
2) Does the time lag indicate that changing ocean temperatures are responsible for CO2 change?
3) Does the fact that temeratures in the troposphere have not increased at the same rate as the temperature on the surface mean the global warming model is inaccurate?
4) Does the fact that we are unable to accurately model the effects of water vapor (which makes up 95% of greenhouse gasses) mean the global warming model is inaccurate?
5) Does solar activity affect the climate?
6) Does solar activity correlate with climate change?
7) Does solar activity give a better prediction of climate change than CO2?
8) Is the current warming historically unusual?
9) Do historical warm periods, like the midevel warm period and the holocene maximum, correspond with extreme weather?
10) Should Africa take advantage of their coal and oil for more reliable electricty?

Re: The Great Global Warming Swindle
According to John T. Houghton (former co-chair of IPCC):
1) Does the 800-year time lag of temperature change precluding CO2 change mean that CO2 change does not cause temperature change?
Yes and No - Carbon dioxide content and temperature correlate closely during the last ice age because temperatures are changing the CO2 content. However, the IPCC does not claim that the ice core samples are the main evidence for global warming and do claim that global warming is caused by an increase in CO2. Regarding the ice core samples, Houghton writes “I often show that diagram in my lectures on climate change but always make the point that it gives no proof of global warming due to increased carbon dioxide.”
2) Does the time lag indicate that changing ocean temperatures are responsible for CO2 change?
Yes and No – The ocean releases CO2 when it heats up. However, the increase in present day CO2 is mainly due to fossil fuel burning.
3) Does the fact that temperatures in the troposphere have not increased at the same rate as the temperature on the surface mean the global warming model is inaccurate?
Not a fact - the troposphere temperatures trends agree with surface temperature trends. Also, it is not true that warming should continue at higher levels. Higher levels are in fact cooling, which is consistent with the global warming model. The surface warms and the higher levels cool below a blanket of CO2.

Re: The Great Global Warming Swindle
4) Does the fact that we are unable to accurately model the effects of water vapor (which makes up 95% of greenhouse gasses) mean the global warming model is inaccurate?
Not a fact - The statement in the documentary that climate models are too complex to make useful climate change projections was made by Professor Smagorinsky in a 1980s clip and referred to the inadequacies of early models. Modern models have been tested in their accuracy in reconstructing current and past climates.
5) Does solar activity affect the climate?
Yes - The sun influences the climate. The Maunder Minimum in the 17th century is a prime example.
6) Does solar activity correlate with climate change?
Yes - Changes in solar output (and the absence of large volcanoes) resulted in the rise in temperature between 1900 and 1940.
7) Does solar activity give a better prediction of climate change than CO2?
No – Current satellite observations of the sun indicate that the sun could not have contributed to global temperature significantly during the last 40 years. Current climate change models include both solar activity and CO2.
8) Is the current warming historically unusual?
Yes - IPCC 4th Assessment Report Summary for Policy makers states that 'Paleoclimate information supports the interpretation that the warmth of the last half century is unusual in at least the previous 1300 years.'
9) Do historical warm periods, like the medieval warm period and the Holocene Maximum, correspond with extreme weather?
No – Current warming is due to fossil fuel burning which is greater than that of the medieval warming period. (Edit: I don't know if there is work showing that the Holocene Maximum confirms or denies a correlation between greater temperatures and massive climate change)

Re: The Great Global Warming Swindle
10) Should Africa take advantage of their coal and oil for more reliable electricity?
No – Houghton writes, "The responsibilities of developed countries therefore are clear, first to reduce their own emissions as rapidly as possible and secondly to assist developing countries with resources and skills to develop their energy and other requirements in sustainable ways."
Houghton also states that volcanoes do not produce more CO2 than what is produced by fossil fuel burning (given as 6.5 gigatons per year in the documentary). However, he does not compare fossil fuel sources to animal and bacteria sources (given as 650 gigatons per year in the documentary), or to decaying plant matter, or to the ocean.
Conclusion: I would be interested to know how many gigatons of CO2 the ocean and decaying plant matter produce. I would also like to know if the numbers on CO2 production in the documentary are accurate. The documentary addresses the question, “Does the correlation of CO2 and temperature evident in ice core samples indicate global warming?” What they should have asked was, “Does an increase in greenhouse gases cause surface warming?” Still questions remain to investigate. How much of a role does ocean warming play? How bad is it? Is there anything we can realistically do about it?

Re: The Great Global Warming Swindle
Here's a great big question that no one seems to be asking: What about those other freenhouse gasses? You know, water vapor being one. Yet idiots are promoting hydrogen as a good alternative source of energy when the chief forms of production are disassociation of the hydrocarbons in natural gas and hydrolysis. Both of these produce greenhouse gasses in production and to boot, the resultant water vapor in burning hydrogen means even more.

Re: The Great Global Warming Swindle
Hydrogen fuel is a pretty stupid idea. Hydrogen only has a maximum efficiency of 60% theoretically, and 44% practically, meaning that more than half of the electricity you put in to make it is lost. A battery, as in an all electric car or plug in hybrid, is 80% efficient. Hydrogen is a gas, so it can be pumped in quickly, meaning that you need not accommodate for forgetting to plug in the car. However, a plug in hybrid lets you still use gas, and many new designs for all electric vehicles can get an 80-95% charge in 10 minutes from a charging station either installed in-home or publicly.

I haven't seen the movie yet because it's not working. But what it sounds like is the zeitgeist documentary.

You see in the comments I actually checked their "facts" and their not there.
But on to Global warming. There are people who are expoilting global warming for profit. But that doesn't mean its not happening.
Personaly, I feel that it is irrelevant to discuss if it does or doesn't exist when it comes to politics. If we find better sources for energy than fossil fuel. Then we should use them. And I don't think we need an end of the world excuse to just be clean.

Re: The Great Global Warming Swindle
CO2 is clean. It's completely harmless. It's just that, when you put more of it into the atmosphere, global mean temperature rises.
Pollution isn't just about poison chemicals anymore. It's also about too much of something in the wrong place.
I'm pretty sure we do need and end-of-the-world scare to get us to rapidly retool the entire world economy away from petrochemicals as its foundation. Fortunately, this particular scare is founded in physical reality. And younger people are acknowledging it almost fast enough. Just in the past couple of decades the perceptual balance has reversed and global warming deniers have become the new kooks.
Maybe there's still a chance for us all.
