The Bugatti Veyron is currently the fastest, most powerful, and most expensive street-legal production car in the world.
Top Gear tested Bugatti's claims that the Veyron can go 253 mph (407 kmh).
Even without the show's dramatic touches, that's pretty impressive.
Now, when they say it's an 850,000 pound car, they aren't talking about the weight! The car will set you back about a 1.5 million American dollars.

The dramatic touches are amusing but I like how the guy starts to get "watery eyes" at the end. Crazy to imagine what you must be seeing at those speeds... or not seeing.

i can't even imagine what this must have been like... maybe one day (if it ever gets built... and someone is brave enough to try it) they'll take the 'melling hellcat' to it's top speed (which is an estimated 275 mph)... of course the difference being that the bugatti engineers built every single inch of the veyron for doing just this... making it look easy to go 253mph... the hellcat on the other hand, was originally designed with a 700hp v10... which doesn't make it any more impressive than a tuned up viper... so they just bored out the engine to 6L and slapped 4 turbo chargers on it... so now it puts out 1175hp... terrifying.

Fastest production car dude, the Hellcat doesn't count as the Veyron has actually been proven as a roadcar, imagine trying to even insure a Hellcat, or even get a license.

for something to classify as 'production' they just need to be continuously produced for a short period. they've only been making a handfull of veyrons every year... and the hellcat is going to be produced on the same level... and as for insurance, if you watch top gear you would see just how hard it is to insure the veyron... most companys don't even know that the car exists.

Of course, if you're the kind of person who can afford one of these, be willing to put your money down for one, and have the connections to actually obtain one (you think they sell these to just anyone?), insurance is probably not much of a problem.

The Hellcat probably still won't count, after all look at the Hennessey Viper SRT-10 Venom 1000. 1000bhp and 255mph, but barely a whimper. That's because no one ever really counts an uprated model as the world's fastest car.
Also the world's fastest road car has to go on the road. Any road. Not just long highways in the States.

never mind the exquisite engineering behind the Bugatti's W16... yeah....

but yeah regardless of the enineering prowess behind the VW bugatti, nothing beats my old 87 K car... 97 hp 110lm torque.. oh yeah baby.. now were flying... 407k/m aint got shit on 0-60 in a week maybe week and a half..

I've done 125 and it was slightly blurry. I can't imagine doing 250, I'd be like when the Millenium Falcon hits Hyperspace and all the stars turn into streaks.

SSC just announced the Ultimate Aero TT. 1183BHP and an estimated 273mph, but not yet proven.
That one will be interesting and a bespoke 6.3L V8 does sound impressive, but will it really reach 273mph?
And, even if it doesn't, Koeniggsegg may bring out an uprated model of the CCR or even CCX (rumours are they will) Bugatti might lose the top speed crown to them. Not forgetting of course the CCR was in fact the fastest production car for a time.

GREAT SCOTT! Does it have a flux capacitor ? Cos it might aswell. I've been to 144mph in my cousins old lotus elise and panicked, plus he's short and fits it in and i'm tall and had chin to knee. Veyron looks far more comfortable but without my knees to my chin i can't kiss my ass goodbye. I want a shot in it, dont even have to drive it just be there when it goes into the future

Sorry if that whole arguing about the hellcat and talking about SSC and Koeniggsegg sounds like i'm against this awesomely beautiful machine.
No one would ever imagine such a beast existing back when it was announced, especially after the tyres started melting on the prototype.
But really, if this is the pinacle of the motor industry then by God human beings have come a long way since the days of riding a horse and pulling a cart.
