Before driving through the Deep South, the Top Gear gang paint each others cars with slogans to incite trouble.
And do they ever find it.
And do they ever find it.

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
My, someones quick uploading this, it was only on telly last night. A brilliantly funny episode, well worth the watch.
Re: Top Gear: Alabama
perhaps it was funny but I have never seen a more biased piece on top gear, what the heck was the point except to poke fun of one local culture. This was the equivalent of lampooning somepigmi tribesmen or some other"differnt" cultural group for a laugh. please. they ust have staged the gfas station scene becasue no gas station attendant is going to look away from the register long enough to come out and harass people for what they have on thier cars, and she probably couldn't see it from inside anyways. Whata piece of trash this segment was, they must be running out of stuff to do.

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
I beg to differ. I was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama. It is not so bad here, as this is sort of a big city, but if you head up north you really can find little shithole towns like that. My friend moved into one for about a year. The entire town consisted of two houses and a gas station. Everyone else lived down long dirt roads in the woods. I made the mistake of forgetting to take out my earring before heading up that way, and I certainly believe there would of been a fight if my friend hadn't been there. They literaly do worship Nascar. They are also huge republicans. These are the kind of people who hunt just for fun. Sure, there is such a thing as southern hospitality, but in small towns doing the things they did, it was like poking at a bees nest. Were they really in danger? Probably not. They just wanted to terrify them. Some rednecks can actually be okay guys as long as you aren't expecting them to be rocket scientists. In some of the small towns the KKK is still in effect, mind you. I'm just happy I live in a large city. As far as the weather thing goes, that was a weak storm compared to some of the hellish tempests that rip through my area in the summer afternoons.

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
wow I didn't expect so many responses to this comment. I'm not going to set myself up here as a champion of southern virtue, but the stero-types are getting a little deep in here.
having lived down a long dirt raod in the woods I have to ask, what the heck is wrong with that. as for litterally worshiping nascar, I have seen the same thing in the midwest and the northeast thats not a southern thing, every sport has rabid fans.
I also have to ask what the heck does a man's political afilliation have to do with weather or not he'll attack a random stanger for what's written on thier car?
hunting is a traditional sport that people not only in the south but in the west and in regions of europe, aisia and Africa participate in, yeah some of the modern equipment used removes the challenge from that activity but hunting in and of itself can be a very rewarding experience ( and please don't get all PETA on me, acording to them its ok for any other animal but man to kill annother animal)

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
"Staged" the gas station scene? Are you kidding? It's not too difficult to imagine that kind of confrontation happening in the deep south. Not only would the owner of the gas station "have time" to confront liberal, possibly gay men, she'd make a point to do it.
By: ghost_dog5150
Re: Top Gear: Alabama
unfortunately that right there is a stereo-type speaking, its also not difficult to imagine many other stereo-typical nightmare situations. does that mean that they happen in reality,, not likely, I stick by my statement. the gas station scene was staged. there is no way that woman could have read what was written on the side of thier truck. and that was the biggest lettering out there.

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
My grandfather is from Alabama and told me of his life growing up on a farm working with, and playing with blacks. He said the only difference to him was that they didn't go to the same schools.
After joining the armed forces in the 40's, he swore he would never live in Alabama again as many of the residents made it to segrigated, and were judgmental to outsiders.
This kind of behavior from anyone is unacceptable. It is one thing to not agree with someone, but another to run them out of town.
Having said that, it is in bad taste for Top Gear to set something like this up to poke fun. It's like sending a man with a lamb chop tied around his neck into a cage full of angry monkeys.

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
Isn't the fact that you equate an animal's need for food (a basic necessity) to a redneck's desire to terrorize the hell out of gays and democrats just a touch disappointing to you? Do you really have standards that low for people? It's their basic, uncontrollable instinct to torture others?

"I think they went too far." Gee, smells like a bunch of whiny twats in here. Everyone knows some creepy shit goes on in those backwoods towns. I suppose the group of commenters here would say that the movie Deliverance is grossly inaccurate and unnecessary. Some things are just funny because they're true.

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
i thought it was pretty funny too. I've got nothing against southerners, its just funny that the words they put on their cars were so effective.
Now they just need to do a segment where they drive through Manhattan with "Wallstreet Sucks" painted on their cars to appease all the people who think they are being biased.

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
I can't really imagine that you would get anywhere near the same reaction. Besides, everyone knows that Wall Street really does suck. :P
Additionally, there really isn't any sort of value judgment about someone else's culture in a phrase like "I'm Bi." It was funny to see people get worked up about shit that had nothing to do with them. Conservative want to limit federal legislative ability except where they can use it to push religious fundamentalism. Like making sodomy illegal. Jesus! How fucking funny is that?

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
"Whiny twats" sure is a good way to describe conservatives when they are the ones on the defensive. They can dish it out, but they sure can't take it.
And when I say conservatives, I mean that in the worst way possible. As in, "I would like to conserve the values that this country was built on: oppression, slavery, exploitation, murder/rape of brown peoples, etc. etc."
Yeah, they sure turn all snivelly when they are shown to be exactly what they are.

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
I think above all this is disrespectful. These british people overreacted to a minor situation that was incited by obvious disrespect. The three cars pulled in simultaneously to the same station with pink letters written all over their cars to enrage southerners, and the southerners were completely aware of what was going on. They were being treated like another species, and those ignorant britons deserved every little bit of abuse they received. and to say that their lives were in danger is absolutely absurd and there is no proof of that whatsoever.
By: Phlow
Re: Top Gear: Alabama
Southerners simply MUST attack pink lettering, democrats and homosexuality? Blaming the victim is weak.

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
heheh for the liberals who espouse love , poeace and tollerance this certainly shows none of it,, you're almost good enough to be a coonservative.
don't forget that they exploited the chinese, russians, germans, irish, italians, poles, and anything else they could exploit.
the difference is that these groups didn't dwell on the opression they joined the system and got over it. talk about a bunch of whiney twats

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
I thought this was funny, because I'm a Southerner and I think you should be able to laugh at yourself. I do see how there is a sort of double standard about the South as Southerners are a group of people it's still ok to make fun of. I'm sure they would have received the same kind of reaction driving through a predominately black neighborhood with "Rap is gay" or something like that on their car, but of course that never would have happened. Maybe some day I'll go to Britain, rent a car, and paint "Princess Di was a slut." and be extremely surprised when people get mad. I laughed at this, because it was funny, but I don't much care for the attitude it represents. Most Southerners are not ignorant and violent, and there's no where else I'd rather call my home.

Sometimes I hate my country and the things many people in it stand for.
Of course, this would happen in a lot of countries... There's no excuse for the behavior of the people at the gas station. The people "inciting" the situation did absolutely nothing to provoke any sort of confrontation.
Why can't we just leave each other alone?

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
I love Top Gear and this is a classic moment. They were not poking fun at any one, they were just messing about and showing what reactions they got. What you do not see in that clip is that their task was to drive through Alabama with getting shot, and they had to paint each others cars to try and get them shot. They were driving through America to see whether is was cheaper to buy a car and sell it again rather than hire one. They ended up in New Orleans and were so shocked at the destruction that still remains from the hurricane, so instead of selling the cars they gave them away to people who had been affected by the disaster.
I also want to say welcome back 'Hamster'!. Its a miracle he survived and Top Gear would not have been the same without him. :D

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
I'm uncomfortable with the hosts doing a programme on the South like a PBS special on animal life, but the whole Easy-Rideresque, "You lost, boah?" reaction isn't sympathetic either.
Re: Top Gear: Alabama
Well, maybe it only felt like a special on animal life because the people at the station acted like animals.

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
As a brit, I've read through all the comments so far on this page with great interest.
While I do sympathise with some of the comments about stereotyping - one thing sticks clearly in my mind:
If you drove through some of the equally small towns near where i live, with similar slogans painted on, the most you'd get is a few disaproving glances from the occasional passing old folk - other than that you'd probably get a few laughs and "horn toots" from everyone else who would see it for what it obviously is - a joke.

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
I agree with you. I am also a Brit and if this was done in Britain there would be very little reaction. This is a perfect example of people thinking they can solve a problem by using violence. In a way i think this clip was purposefully designed to show this. I understand peoples opinion that its just poking fun at peoples beliefs but it is just a bit of fun and i found the clip very funny as they got so angry and violent just because of some words painted on a car.
By: miller123
Re: Top Gear: Alabama
Wow, Just a few words. So lets take it a bit further and we paint on a car "KKK Rocks" and drive thru New Orleans. It's just a few words it should be fine, right?
By: PI55_FLAP5
Re: Top Gear: Alabama
Again, i don't agree with that because your using a completely unequal analogy.
After all the KKK represents an organisation synonymous with racial hatred, violence, intimidation and murder - which kinda guarantees an understandably strong reaction.
This is slightly different to saying you dont like their music/motorsports, or support different politicians.

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
Completely agreed here, and I am mystified by the people here making these retarded analogies which equate Hillary Clinton with the Klan. C'mon folks, yer makin' yerselves look like extras from this clip.
"This clip is unfair because you'd get also an angry reaction if you drove through San Francisco with 'I rape children' written on your car!"
I think that what was telling about the above Klan comment is that apparently the people in this clip wouldn't be offended if they saw a car with "KKK Rocks" written on it. Do you think that this is helping your argument?

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
Sorry Jeremy but this skit had been performed a couple of years ago (and to greater effect) by Sacha Baron Cohan, in character as a gay Austrian model who went to an Alabama football game. I suspect Top Gear has exhausted their original ideas.
I agree that slogans that are derogatory toward NASCAR, country music, or Hillary Clinton might get laughs in England. But
what about slogans that... say mock Princess Di's death or make unfounded and personal claims about her attractivness or sexuality, or lack there of, etc... you get the idea.
Finally, I one's risk of being injured by an angry mob, beaten-up, or even murdered at a professional English soccer match is far greater than any NASCAR event.

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
First, suggesting that a genuine politician should become president is far removed from mocking someones death - your analogy simply doesn't fit.
Comments such as "Soccer sucks", "Drum n Bass is rubbish" and "Robert Kilroy-Silk for Prime Minister" however would be a far better comparison (and is what i originally suggested, but perhaps didn't make clear enough), and would - as i descirbed - result in nothing more than a bit of laughter and light-hearted banter.
As for your comment about English football hooliganism - it was relevant about 15-20 years ago! - besides, who even suggested that you'd get beaten up at a NASCAR race? And if you want to get into a discussion about our comparative murder rates - bring it on... you'll lose miserably.

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
So, let's see, everyone from England is non-violent, and all people in the Southern US are angry, ignorant, and willing to physically attack someone who has different opinions. Yeah that's fair. I know I'm just a dumb redneck, but isn't there a word that describes blaming an entire group of people for the actions of a few. Stereotyping maybe, or prejudice? It is a fact that a few African-Americans sell drugs and are in gangs. However, if someone suggests that all blacks are crack dealers they would instantly be labeled a racist, and rightly so. So while you sit there, thinking you are so much better than everyone else who didn't happened to be born in Britain, I hope you'll someday realize that you are much more bigoted and small-minded than the people you so easily disparage.

The only comment about southern culture was "NASCAR sucks."
"I'm bi" and "Hillary for prez" are completely different from "Princess Di is a slut." Princess Di is also a world off from NASCAR. Your response would be valid if their cars had said, say, "George Bush fucks boys."

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
This is James May's blog regarding the attack on him, clarkson and hammond;
That bit in our American Holiday Video where we were attacked by the rednecks in the Alabama petrol station: I realise now that I should have seen it coming.
We'd been warned by some American modernists - i.e. Californians - that the southerners wouldn't take kindly to any of our light mockery of the things they hold dear - Bush, heterosexuality, NASCAR, Country and Western, short hair...
But I never really believed they would take it quite that badly.
But then, earlier that day I had stopped at another petrol station and looked at the selection of T-shirts on sale to the locals. One proclaimed 'God, pick-ups and beer' with a picture of a Dodge like Hammond's on it. Another sported some legend about the right to bear arms.
And yet another depicted the Confederate flag and a picture of, er, General Stonewall Jackson. I think this may have been a vital clue to the mentality of the hicks.
Wasn't Jackson a general from the civil war? And didn't he die from complications resulting from the amputation of his arm after he was inadvertently shot by his own men?
And, more importantly, wasn't all this rather a long time ago? And what's with the confederate flag? Do they still lament the abolition of slavery or something?
It's been pointed out to me that the old flag, rather than standing for a discredited set of social and political values, is now just a fanciful graphic.
The Dukes of Hazzard, after all, had one on the roof of their car, and no one thought it was in any way distasteful. It was just the good ol' boys from the South being sentimental about their roots.
And that seemed like a fair comment. I like a sense of history as much as anyone. But then something else occured to me.
I've never met anyone in Europe wearing a swastika T-shirt.

Cmon people. This isn't about Alabama, or the Us, or Britain.
It's about dumb people in general.
If you're in some parts of the UK and you drive around with a car that says, "Manchester United Sucks", you'd probably get your ass kicked
If you're in France and you write a bunch of slogans on your car about how worthless france is in wars, it'd probably cause trouble
They just picked Alabama because it's the easiest place to do a skit like this.
There's places in every country in the world where you could do something similar and get the same reaction.
I for one love Top Gear, and thought the skit was hillarious, and I don't think they meant any harm towards the reputation of Alabama or the US.

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
I just registered for this site because this is the first time I've ever felt the need to comment on one of the videos posted here. I'm from Alabama and found this video to be more annoying than anything else. I can take a good joke as much as the next person, but sometimes jokes cross the line into the area of bad taste. The way this is presented just furthers stereotypes that are unfair and simply not true. For starters is seems that we are all homophobic, which is not true. I myself am gay, I have something on my car displaying this fact as do some of my friends, and not one of us have been attacked or discriminated against. The video also claims we would be offended by cars that boast support for Hillary Clinton, which as a republican I would find foolish but I digress...If you simply look at the history of the state you would find that with only three exceptions since 1874, all of our governers have been Democrats. I don't understand how it became acceptable in our culture for other areas of the country to point their fingers at us as ignorant racists or idiotic hicks when doing so makes you just as equally wrong. I don't mind a joke that exposes those who are ignorant, but when you do something that is blatently disrespectful it becomes a problem. What is more frustrating is that there are those who will see a video like this and assume that everyone in the state behaves the way these people did. What needs to be pointed out is that if they are in a road trip across the state like one of the posters commented, then you are only seeing three minutes of a several hour trip, and of course they are going to look for the places and people that will give them the reaction they want for the show. Anyway, had to defend all of us ignorant southerners who "probably don't even have the internet."

Turning what was obviously meant as harmless fun into a political debate on a show NOT EVEN FILMED/ SET/BASED OR AS FAR AS I KNOW TRANSMITTED ON A MAJOR NETWORK in the States is a f**king joke.
Some of you really need to develop some sort of sense of humour.
And TangleRED needs to improve his/her grammar dramatically.

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
Wow this is the most comments ive ever seen on a headline while it was still the most recently posted headline. This could be some sort of record.
As far as the clip goes, I think it was hilarious and I dont believe it was staged. I think you could probably get a similar reaction if you drove through the streets of downtown Boston with a huge sign saying "Red Sox Suck" You'd be lucky if your car escaped without a broken window at least.

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
Obviously people in Alabama are closed minded idiots! This episode almost made me ashamed to admit that I live in the same country as the people in this video. All you hicks need to just get off the computer and get back to screwing your sisters or goats, or whatever you do!

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
a) Hello! I'm Charli and I'm English (but I did live in the US for a couple of years) and reading all of these comments has both pissed me off and made me laugh :) I have a whole lot of stuff to say about it so here goes...
b) PI55_FLAP5.. how am I supposed to take you seriously with a name like piss flaps?
c) Jeremy - "people in certain parts of America people have started to mate with vegetables!" - Haha! Hilarious! To be fair you could say the same about people living in Liverpool but still.. hilarious.
d) Please don't be so vain as to think the Top Gear guys only pick on Americans.. I myself have heard some fantastic lines about the french, germans, welsh... pretty much anyone anywhere gets a good bashing. Gotta love that 'british sense of humour' - one of the things I missed most when I moved to Rhode Island in the good ol' US of A a while back.
e) Some people seem to think that they're using one hick town as an example for all of the US. An english person wouldn't think ‘Oh, that place sucks. All of America must be like that” unless they had never seen or heard of any other places in America. Trust me, we get enough American TV to realize not all Americans are stupid rednecks =P
f) “I am also a Brit and if this was done in Britain there would be very little reaction. This is a perfect example of people thinking they can solve a problem by using violence. In a way i think this clip was purposefully designed to show this. I understand peoples opinion that its just poking fun at peoples beliefs but it is just a bit of fun and i found the clip very funny as they got so angry and violent just because of some words painted on a car.” – nice comment =) totally agree.
g) “Maybe some day I'll go to Britain, rent a car, and paint "Princess Di was a slut." and be extremely surprised when people get mad.” First of all.. that’s very different to the TG guys slogans. Secondly, why do you guys still think we’re in mourning over princess di? I doubt any brit would react if you said something derogatory about her. We’re all pretty sick of all the frickin’ inquests and stuff. It has been like 10 years. We’re over it!
h) Wooah I’m glad I don’t live in Alabama. Jeez.
i) The people in that town are so pissy. They take offence at the notion that homosexuality is acceptable. They can’t take a joke. Their ignorant, arrogant ways make me want to be sick! I hate people like that who make the rest of the us look bad. On the whole, america’s an awesome place.
j) “I think above all this is disrespectful. These british people overreacted to a minor situation that was incited by obvious disrespect. The three cars pulled in simultaneously to the same station with pink letters written all over their cars to enrage southerners, and the southerners were completely aware of what was going on. They were being treated like another species, and those ignorant britons deserved every little bit of abuse they received.” – When did this turn into an England vs america war? Why is the fact they’re English so important to you? And they were not treating the southerners like a different species. Hammond was actually very polite when he talked to that stupid, incredibly rude shop owner. They wrote some stuff on their cars insulting things those people say they like. The TG guys were just seeing if they would get a reaction… and yes they did. It was a huge and ridiculous overreaction.
k) “they ust have staged the gfas station scene becasue no gas station attendant is going to look away from the register long enough to come out and harass people for what they have on thier cars, and she probably couldn't see it from inside anyways. Whata piece of trash this segment was, they must be running out of stuff to do.” Nice spelling. And did it really look staged to you? May was crapping himself!
l) “If you drove through some of the equally small towns near where i live, with similar slogans painted on, the most you'd get is a few disaproving glances from the occasional passing old folk - other than that you'd probably get a few laughs and "horn toots" from everyone else who would see it for what it obviously is - a joke.” – damn straight.
m) “Again, i don't agree with that because your using a completely unequal analogy.
After all the KKK represents an organisation synonymous with racial hatred, violence, intimidation and murder - which kinda guarantees an understandably strong reaction.
This is slightly different to saying you dont like their music/motorsports, or support different politicians.” – another very eloquent and truthful comment.
n) “First, suggesting that a genuine politician should become president is far removed from mocking someones death - your analogy simply doesn't fit.
And if you want to get into a discussion about our comparative murder rates - bring it on... you'll lose miserably.” – couldn’t have put it better myself =)
o) I’m getting bored of typing.
p) And on that bombshell, goodnight!

Well it’s a transparent attempt to start a fight as well as being extremely cliché (+ some levying of ignorant and possibly bigoted) thing to say. Example: hay lets go see if we can get somebody to beat us up over there in old wats it’s name. They like that DI chick right?
The mistake the woman made was to feed the troll’s.

Re: Top Gear: Alabama
Here is a truly fantastic Top Gear quotation;
Jason: ...and the new Viper, which is the American equivalent of a sports car...
Jeremy: Yeah...
Jason: ...in the same way, I guess, that George Bush is the equivalent of a President.
I thought it was relevant =P
