Re: Adventures of Mark Twain: Angel Named Satan
I saw that on PBS a loooong time ago. The whole thing is great and teachers a lot of life lessons to children. I'm actually going to try and find the whole thing now. :D

Re: Adventures of Mark Twain: Angel Named Satan
This post is in no way exaggerated:

I watched this movie as a child and was horrified throughout the whole thing. It was like being totally absorbed into what I can only describe now as a realy bad acid trip. I had the worst nightmares for years afterwards. And the worst part is I always wondered what Albert Einstien had to do with Satan and such. Now I realize that it was actually Mark Twain (which still doesn't make a whole lot of sense). My parents never had recollection of this movie so after a number of years I began to simply think I had imagined the whole thing.

Thanks for bringing those painful memories back :/

Clearly not intented for children. The part where the villagers are given life and one child says, "looks like my pap on Saturday night" a reference to being drunk. In all likely hood the local channel that aired it didn't realize its intended audience.

Re: Adventures of Mark Twain: Angel Named Satan
Have you read Huck Finn and Tow Sawyer? Huck's dad is the town drunk, beats Huck and tries to finagle the money Huck and Tom steal from some thieves. When his dad kidnaps him, Huck is sometimes afraid his pap will kill him in a drunken rage. That's when he escapes down the river with the slave Jim--he's running away from his drunken, violent father. You can tell which one is Huck because smokes a pipe regularly and it's in his hand in the clip. Good reading, but that part is true to the story.

They really are worth reading. Twain is an excellent story teller, and the plot's good. Especially good is the characterization. Not overblown, carefully drawn and subtle. Although it's obvious that Tom and Huck are representatives of fantastic thinking and common sense, they're really believable. Beautiful stories, both of them.

"Now I realize that it was actually Mark Twain (which still doesn't make a whole lot of sense)."

Mark Twain wrote a lot about the god and devil, most of them humorous as he was a committed atheist. Here the story is elaborating on one of Twain's assumptions that the devil is amoral not IMmoral. The devil sees no difference in right or wrong, things just ARE and that's it.

Another point might be that the devil punishes the clay humans in the same manner that God did in the Bible. He gets pissed at their fighting over the bull (greed) and smites them. Of course he doesn't smite them for being greedy but because of their annoying squabbling. Same wrath, different reasons...but which is better?

Re: Adventures of Mark Twain: Angel Named Satan
I forgot all about this movie. It actually spurred my interest in animation and clay as a child (Interest i have since done nothing with) So much detail! I thought this scene in particular to be amazing. The detail, the depiction, I felt romanced by the whole movie but this scene was impressionable.
