How the heck did they fit 26:28 of show time in only half an hour??

Before deregulation of commercial time in the 1980s by the FCC, there used to be very strict limits on the amount of ads that could be run and the number of breaks that could be taken. It varied with the time slot that the show aired in, so that late night TV could still have almost more ads than actual talk show content but also so that prime time shows had something like five minutes tops for each half hour segment. Don't forget the intro, BTW.
