I know there have been some incidents of players breaking the glass on the backboards, maybe we can see a few of those too. Imagine how much Shaq weighs, then when he dunks like that with his legs lifted, purposely hanging on the rim. Doing that with any amount of force I think would put at least 500 lbs of pressure on that thing, frankly im surprised this isnt a more common occurance.

No, actually. Darrell Dawkins, the Chocolate Thunder, did it twice in one season back in '79.

Dawkins only shattered the backboards by ripping the rims from the glass. Shaq brought the whole thing down, which kinda makes me think there was something wrong with it considering the rims are now breakaway.
