The Little Match Girl
An animated short based on Hans Christian Andersen's tale about a poor young girl with a burning desire to find comfort and happiness in her life.

Desperate to keep warm, the girl lights the matches she sells, and envisions a very different life for herself in the fiery flames filled with images of loving relatives, bountiful food, and a place to call home.

Disney created this short film to accompany the DVD re-release of The Little Mermaid.

It's beautiful and tragic. A work of art from Disney.

Re: The Little Match Girl
So does she die at the end or not? In the story by Hans Christian Andersen she ends up dreaming of her grandmother and freezes to death. But w/Disney all things are possible.

Re: The Little Match Girl
There was a big push behind the scenes to save her, but they decided it would have weakened the story immeasurably. So perhaps her soul flies free, but the last image is her little body frozen in the snow. She's gone.

Incidentally, along with Dali's short Destino this would have been in the third Fantasia movie, had it been made.
